What are the responsibilities and job description for the Spanish Immersion First Grade Teacher Assistant position at Pitt County Schools?
We are seeking a dedicated, bilingual (Spanish/English) Teacher Assistant to support the instructional and classroom management needs of our Dual Language 90/10 Spanish Immersion Program. The successful candidate will collaborate with the lead teacher to foster a learning environment where students acquire academic content while developing bilingualism and biliteracy.
In this 90/10 model, instruction is delivered 90% in Spanish and 10% in English in the early grades, gradually shifting to a 75/25 balance. The Teacher Assistant plays a key role in supporting Spanish language development, classroom routines, and differentiated instruction to meet the needs of all learners.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist the lead teacher in delivering instruction primarily in Spanish across subject areas.
Reinforce lesson content and language objectives through small group or one-on-one support.
Help create and maintain a print-rich, culturally responsive classroom environment.
Support classroom management and ensure student safety and engagement.
Prepare instructional materials in Spanish and assist with grading or student assessment tasks as directed.
Provide language modeling and promote positive social interactions in both Spanish and English.
Assist with transitions, lunch, recess, and other non-instructional duties as assigned.
Communicate effectively and respectfully with students, staff, and families.
Participate in professional development and school-based trainings related to immersion education and instructional support.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree preferred.
Proficiency in spoken and written Spanish and English.
Experience working with elementary-aged children in an educational setting preferred.
Understanding of dual language or immersion programs is a plus.
Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and a collaborative spirit.
Ability to follow directions, take initiative, and maintain confidentiality.
