Position Overview:
As a Summer Camp Counselor at the YMCA, you will play a vital role in providing a safe, fun, and enriching environment for children during our summer camp program. You will engage campers in age-appropriate activities that encourage social, emotional, and physical development. Your leadership and commitment to fostering a positive, inclusive atmosphere will help children develop confidence, build friendships, and create lasting memories.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise Campers: Ensure the safety and well-being of all campers by supervising their activities, behavior, and interactions throughout the camp day.
- Activity Leadership: Lead and participate in various camp activities, including arts and crafts, sports, team-building exercises, nature exploration, and swimming.
- Positive Role Model: Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating strong communication skills, teamwork, and YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
- Camp Spirit: Encourage camper participation, promote enthusiasm, and foster a sense of community within the group.
- Group Management: Maintain a structured environment by managing camper behavior, addressing conflicts appropriately, and ensuring all campers are included.
- Communication: Regularly communicate with campers, parents, and fellow staff members to ensure that all needs are being met and concerns are addressed promptly.
- Safety and Emergency Procedures: Follow all safety procedures and be prepared to respond to emergencies or accidents as needed.
- Collaboration: Work closely with fellow counselors and camp leadership to create and maintain a positive, collaborative team environment.
Qualifications:
- Must be at least 16 years of age or older.
- Previous experience working with children is preferred, but not required.
- Enthusiasm, creativity, and a passion for working with youth.
- Ability to model strong leadership skills, including teamwork and conflict resolution.
- Must pass a comprehensive background check and any required certifications of CPR/First Aid, and Child Abuse Prevention.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to engage with campers, parents, and staff in a positive and respectful manner.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions for extended periods.
- Ability to lift, move, or carry up to 30lbs pounds, assist in setting up camp equipment, and help with camper mobility as necessary. Must be able to stand for multiple hours at a time.
- Ability to actively engage in games, sports, swimming, and other physical activities.
