POSITION TITLE
Assistant Teacher, Community-Based Vocational Education/Training 2024-25 School Year
Job Description Summary
The Assistant Teacher for Community-Based Vocational Education/Training will provide pre-employment transition services to students ages 14 through 21 with a wide range of disabilities. Services may include: career exploration, employment preparation, work-based learning opportunities and the development of soft skills (i.e. self-advocacy, communication, social skills and independent living skills). The Assistant Teacher will support students in a variety of settings including schools, local businesses and worksites within the community.
The Assistant Teacher for Community-Based Vocational Education/Training works within the Program for Students with Exceptionalities (PSE) Secondary Transition department and is responsible for assisting in carrying out a program consistent with the philosophy of the Program for Students with Exceptionalities (PSE).
The Assistant Teacher reports to the Program Coordinator for day-to-day activities and the District Transition Coordinator for technical assistance and support and to the Senior Program Officer for supervisory and evaluative purposes.

Essential Functions
- Meet with teachers and transition counselors to initiate referrals
- Distribute and collect permission forms and other paperwork necessary for program participation
- Develop “job club” activities (i.e. career exploration, resume writing, interview skills, appropriate workplace behaviors, etc.)
- Conduct “job clubs” within the classroom and/or worksite to help build confidence and assess job readiness skills
- Administer transition assessments with students
- Assist in recruiting new worksites
- Determine appropriate worksite placements for students
- Coordinate transportation with PPS transportation department and designated bus companies
- Communicate with school teams (incl. teachers, counselors, administrators), transition staff, job coaches, transportation, students, parents and worksite supervisors as necessary
- Provide training for new job coaches
- Participate in IEP meetings, as requested
- Participate in professional development and other trainings, as scheduled
- Support up to (5) students on a worksite
- Assess student's ability to perform required tasks
- Collect and record data
- Maintain daily log of student's performance on the worksite
- Generate reports to reflect student's job readiness skills, soft skills, and behaviors
- Maintain contact with worksite supervisors
- Supervise students when entering/exiting vans/buses at the worksites
- Develop visual aids, when necessary, to help students learn job tasks
- Provide accommodations, when necessary, to help students be successful on the worksite
- Work with students in a positive, respectful manner
- Be respectful of worksites and students impact on daily activities
- Adhere to specific worksite rules and responsibilities, including confidentiality
- Check emails and phone messages daily and respond in a timely manner
- ?Other relevant duties as assigned by supervisor in support of the department's or school's goals and objectives and the District's mission and Superintendent's Priority Goals. ?
- Must have reliable transportation
- Must have reliable cell phone and service provider
- Must be willing to supervise students 'off-site' at various work sites in Pittsburgh area
- Must be willing & able to ride in school vehicles with students to/from worksite, if necessary
- Familiarity with Microsoft Suite programs (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Forms, etc.) and Google Drive
- Must possess the ability to work individually and as part of a team
- 48 College Credits OR High School Diploma and successful completion of a reading and math competency assessment

- Experience with children ages 14 with Autism and Intellectual Disabilities is preferred.
- First Aid certification/training preferred.
- Enthusiastic about advancing student achievement in an urban public school district and preparing students for the world of work.
