What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sewer Operation - Vactor Operator position at Pittsburgh Water?
The Vactor Operator will operate a Vactor truck, empty septic tanks, and clean sewer pipes for proper preventative maintenance.
RESPONSIBILITIES● Operate Flusher, Vactor, Jetter, and truck● Inspect mechanical conditions of vehicle and report malfunctions● Perform preventative maintenance, make repairs and adjustments● Schedule periodic maintenance on the vehicle after carefully checking the oil, water, gas, tires etc. ● Maintain records on equipment● Transport crews, load and unload equipment, and materials as requested or required● Follow all safety protocol and procedures● May be required to direct assigned work crews and direct traffic at work sites● May work all three shifts, overtime, weekends, and holidays● May perform activities and functions of related lower-level personnel and other related tasks● Perform other tasks as assigned or required
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES● Considerable knowledge and skill in the operation of heavy trucks and related special motorized equipment of safety rules and regulations regarding the work● Considerable knowledge of traffic and other regulations governing vehicle operation● Basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance and repair, city streets and geography● Ability to drive in heavy traffic and adverse weather conditions● Follow oral and written instruction● Knowledge and ability to use computers and related technology● Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, associates, and the public
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSThe following requirements list the minimum education/training/experience required to qualify for this job. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be accepted.● Maintain a valid Pennsylvania Class B commercial driver’s license with tank (N) endorsement or “X” combination hazardous materials and tank truck endorsements throughout employment. ● Maintain a valid Pennsylvania class B commercial driver’s license in accordance with the commercial driver’s license requirements.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTSA performance or written exam may be required prior to appointment.
Applicant must present a current, valid Class C (Class 1) PA Motor Vehicle Operator’s License at the time of application or prior to appointment. A valid driver’s license must be maintained throughout employment.
Applicant must have permanent residency in Allegheny County at the time of appointment and remain a resident in Allegheny County throughout employment with the Pittsburgh Water:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will work in loud conditions with vibrations, traffic, mechanical, chemical, fire, and explosive risks. The employee is regularly required to operate a pickup truck, van, forklift, and related equipment; sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and see, talk, and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl on even and uneven surfaces. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and depth perception.
CONDITIONSWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to a moderate or quiet noise level in the office work environment. May perform work outdoors under extreme weather. The employee may be exposed to confined, high spaces, like erect scaffolding; loud conditions with vibrations, traffic, mechanical, chemical, fire, and explosive risks; and odors, dusts, fumes, mists, poor ventilation, and gases which may require a respirator. Availability to work all three shifts, as well as weekends, and holidays. Subject to remain on duty beyond normal hours and/or recalled during emergency situations or other extensive periods.
