POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: School Nurse Coordinator (Anticipated for 2025-2026)
FLSA: Exempt
REPORTS TO: Assistant Superintendent for Support Services
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Ten month (215 days)
SUPERVISES: Full-time and substitute school nurses
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED:
- Current license to practice as a registered professional nurse in the
Commonwealth of Virginia
- Must have a minimum of five years of supervised nursing experience prior to entry into school nursing practice
- Current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
- Experience with Medicaid billing for nursing services
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
PREFERRED:
- Pediatric/Adolescent Health experience
- Supervision experience
- Strong computer skills
- Knowledge of Titmus and Audiometer equipment
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Compliance Duties:
- Ensure completion of mandated screenings
- Assist principals and school nurses in the interpretation of and compliance with State and local laws and regulations concerning student health services, including immunization requirements
- Monitor the collection and submission of information necessary to complete the required Department of Education reports
- Monitor medication delivery to comply with the Medication Procedure
Training Duties-Coordinate and teach classes in the following areas:
- CPR, First Aid
- Administration of insulin and glucagon
- Medication administration in the school environment
- Provide guidelines for medical problems and diseases encountered by the school nurses
- Provide training and updates for the computer-based health program used by building level
- Provide orientation and training for full-time and substitute nurses
Program Coordination and Monitoring Duties:
- Coordinate/implement the VHSL requirements related to Division Wrestling Program
- Coordinate vaccine clinics, such as influenza and Tdap
- Collaborate with the local health department regarding local, State and national health concerns as they relate to students and staff
- Monitor documentation, screening and immunization entries into the computer-based health program by the school nurses
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Attend Special Education meetings when medical expertise is required
- Participate in crisis intervention, as requested
- Serve as a resource for the clinical/medical aspects of the school nurses’ yearly evaluations, as requested
