PL Developments, also known as PLD, is a leading manufacturer, packager, and distributor of over-the-counter (OTC) pharmaceutical products and consumer healthcare goods.
SUMMARY:
The EHS Specialist supports the EHS Manager in the development, implementation, and maintenance of environmental, health, and safety programs across PLD’s pharmaceutical manufacturing facility and two distribution centers. The role ensures compliance with regulations, promotes a culture of safety, and provides guidance on environmental and safety best practices. The EHS Specialist must maintain confidentiality on all issues related to this position. This position requires flexibility to work additional hours when needed to meet the needs of the facilities.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8am-5pm, additional hours may be required
Must be able to travel to between sites
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in occupational health, Environmental Health, Environmental Science, or other related degree.
- 5 years' experience in the EHS field in a manufacturing environment, pharmaceutical preferred.
- Certified Safety Professional preferred but not required (CHMM, CSP, CIH, RCRA, OSHA etc.).
- Expert knowledge of safety and environmental regulations and consensus standards (OSHA, EPA, DOT), inspection procedures, audits, hazard reviews, incident prevention, and incident investigation techniques.
- Experience in all railcar liquid unloading systems, not required, but preferred.
- Demonstrate ability to recognize, evaluate, and recommend controls for workplace hazards.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Effective communication and training abilities.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with the EHS Manager and site teams.
- Proficiency in the use of computers with knowledge of MS office products including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
- Ability to lead teams and work under tight deadlines.
- Bi-lingual in English and Spanish preferred, but not required
- OSHA 30 Certified General Industry
- Ability to work extended hours beyond normal work schedule to include, but not limited to evenings, weekends, extended shifts, and/or extra shifts, sometimes on short notice.
- Travel for this position will be required between the sites in Piedmont, and Duncan, SC.
- High level of integrity and professionalism, with the ability to always maintain confidentiality.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for adhering to company rules, EHS goals, and initiatives established by EHS Management.
- Perform regular inspections of facilities to identify potential hazards and ensure adherence to OSHA, EPA and other relevant safety and environmental regulations.
- Conduct Risk Assessments to identify and prioritize potential hazards in the workplace and develop mitigation strategies.
- Perform specific safety training as required by the Manager.
- Participate in emergency response and planning drills.
- Lead incident investigations resulting in lost time claims and/or safety violations and property damage. Determine root causes, implement corrective actions and communicate lessons learned.
- Oversee Hazardous Waste management programs, including proper labeling, storage, and disposal for all SC Facilities.
- Monitor performance to ensure safety goals and objectives are being met for all SC facilities.
- Assist in the development and implementation of EHS policies and procedures for all SC Facilities.
- Update key performance indicators (KPI) (Leading and Lagging Indicators) for site scoreboard.
- Maintain the EHS SharePoint page and Footprint report.
- Prepare and submit necessary reports to regulatory agencies which include Air, Water, and Waste.
- Collaborate with Plant Management to develop and implement safety and environmental initiatives. (Green Teams)
- Participate in Regulatory Inspections and assist in addressing concerns and citations.
- Assists the EHS Manager in communication with Operations personnel to discuss any safety issues.
- Set up Purchase Order (PO) Requisitions and assist EHS Manager with vendor activities that affect PLD’s safety and its environment.
- Assist EHS Manager with Corporate internal EHS Audit program, Customer Audits, and Compliance Inspections.
- Maintain strict confidentiality on all issues related to safety incidents, investigations, regulatory compliance, employee matters, and other sensitive information related to this position.
- Maintain OSHA Required certifications.
- Perform other related duties as necessary or assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to stand, walk, and move frequently between the manufacturing site and distribution centers for extended periods.
- Ability to climb stairs, ladders, and access heights when conducting inspections or assessments.
- Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Requires the ability to bend, crouch, kneel, and reach confined spaces.
- Visual acuity to review documents, inspect equipment, and ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Must be able to wear the required personal protective equipment (PPE), including respiratory protection, as needed.
