Middle School Principal (Job Description)
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
- Plan, organize, control and direct all instructional activities, extracurricular events, special programs and plant operations
- Implement and modify the school’s mission, goals, objectives and programs as needed
- Confer with district office regarding personnel, programs, students, finances and legal requirements
- Recruit, interview, select, direct, supervise and evaluate certificated and classified personnel
- Assign Vice-Principal, teachers, counselors and other staff as appropriate to meet school goals and objectives
- Develop and implement the master schedule
- Direct and participate in a planned program of informal and formal classroom visitations and observations
- Document evidence of substandard performance and recommend discipline, reassignment or termination action as appropriate
- Enforce all State and District laws, codes and policies
- Administer District and site discipline, intervention policies and safety programs
- Develop and administer site budgets and assure proper allocation of funds for instructional and non-instructional equipment and materials
- Direct the on-going evaluation and revision, as needed, of curriculum and instructional programs
- Analyze data and develop and implement plans for instructional improvement growing out of program assessment
- Communicate with teachers to insure that instructional programs meet student needs and District requirements
- Establish, coordinate and maintain communication with parent groups, community groups, law enforcement agencies and other public agencies
- Prepare and write correspondence, bulletins and other communications on behalf of the school
- Arrange for school level public relations and publicity for special events and achievements as appropriate
- Maintain articulation between the middle and elementary school(s) and with the local high school(s)
- Develop and direct an orientation program for new students
- Assure the health, safety and welfare of all students
- Supervise or provide for supervision of students before and after school, during the school day and at any special events.
- Discipline students according to established guidelines
- Oversee attendance, behavior management, counseling, guidance and other student support services
- Meet individually with parents/guardians and students as needed
- Coordinate the maintenance and operations of the school plant
- Assure proper management, maintenance and inventory of materials, equipment, buildings and grounds
- Direct the implementation of staff development and in-service training
- Update staff on revised policies and procedures and implement changes
- Attend, conduct and/or chair a variety of meetings with staff, parents and community
- Conduct student or parent/guardian appeal meetings
- Attend IEP, 504 and other meetings as appropriate
- Respond to and work to resolve student, parent/guardian and staff complaints
- Represent the school at various Board, District and community functions
- Direct the preparation and maintenance of a variety of District, County, State and federally mandated reports and records regarding student attendance, welfare, discipline, safety, academic achievement, certification for graduation and others as needed
- Direct the maintenance of comprehensive files pertaining to students, staff, plant facilities, inventories, financial information and contracts as needed
- Perform related duties as assigned
- Basic subjects taught in district schools including mathematics, reading, writing, language arts, spelling, history/social studies, science, art, music, physical education,
- Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary
- Oral and written communication skills
- Child guidance principles and practices as appropriate to middle school students
