Workshop Assistant

Public Services Team
part-time $18/hr

The Plain City Public Library is looking for a creative, energetic, and customer service oriented individual to join our Public Services team in serving as a part-time Workshop Assistant in the library's makerspace.

Our mission is to provide resources to enhance the quality and enjoyment of life; to do so the Plain City Public Library believes in:

  • Being excellent communicators; thriving in a flexible environment that values health, family, and respect for one another
  • Ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for personalized attention without discrimination
  • Maintaining an accessible facility that fosters curiosity and discovery for all people, through traditional services, education and emerging technologies
  • Building community partnerships through dynamic outreach and wide-ranging programs
  • Being mindful of the cultural heritage of our communities and how it shapes us while we seek out new trends and embrace opportunities for the future

The Workshop Assistant will be an essential part of the library’s programming team as they assist with the development and execution of library programs, specifically with the use of workshop equipment such as a 3D printer, wide-format printer, laser cutter, heat presses, digital cameras, and a wide variety of other mechanicals . Though prior experience in a library makerspace setting is preferred, we will train an applicant with a penchant for makerspace activities. The Workshop Assistant’s day is rarely ever the same. Some days are quietly dressed up in a recording studio and other days are a loud dusty mess.

Under the guidance of a team librarian, the Assistant will be able to operate, perform maintenance on, and instruct with all workshop equipment. The Assistant may also produce appropriate communicative materials such as memos, posters, social media, fliers, videos, sound clips, evaluations, displays, and other marketing materials. They will troubleshoot equipment problems; assist at the Circulation or Information Desk as needed; or assist with creation and display of workshop projects and samples.

All library team members sometime participate in special events and promotions that may take place during evenings, weekends, or holidays outside of their routine schedule. They may also drive the library outreach vehicle to off-site locations to promote library programs and services.

The desired candidate will have experience working with individuals of all ages, know their way around organizational apps, have experience with creating and editing digital media, and possess an endless supply of curiosity. They must have a valid Ohio driver’s license with an insurable record to drive the library’s outreach vehicle. Since many library programs happen on evenings and weekends, the Workshop Assistant must work Fridays from 9am to 5pm and one Saturday approximately every six weeks, as well as every Monday, Tuesday, & Thursday from 12pm to 8pm. The successful candidate will be responsible for routinely opening or closing the library on specified days.

Candidates with public library and customer service experience are preferred. A high school diploma or equivalent is an absolute must. The successful candidate will earn $18 an hour and will need to pass a criminal background check along with other screenings as required for employment. The Workshop Assistant would expect to work approximately 32 hours per week, serve as a substitute for coworkers when needed, and attend special community functions and library events.
