About the Position:
The Township of Plainsboro is seeking a dynamic and experienced Volunteer Counselor who would be
responsible for the safety and well-being of an assigned group of campers; assisting the Senior Counselors,
Junior Counselors, Specialty Teachers, and Camp Directors.
For the Volunteer Counselor, the first 6 weeks of camp will include aquatics, where Volunteer Counselors are
expected to swim with their group of campers (one end of the pool is shallow enough to stand in at the
minimum). Volunteer Counselors will be responsible for the supervision of their assigned group of campers
during off-site field trips, including while on the bus and in transit to and from the camp.
The Volunteer Counselor will supervise the group (staff and campers) at all times, oversee routine tasks
related to the group, and plan and implement counselor-run activities. The Volunteer Counselor will
supervise the junior & volunteer counselors and will report to the camp director. The Volunteer Counselor
will participate in scheduled activities and help plan and implement counselor-run activities. Volunteer
Counselors are expected to adhere to the policies and guidelines required of all staff.
The volunteer counselor works under the supervision of the senior and junior counselors and reports to the
camp director and must be at least 15 years old as of 6/1/25.
Camp participant population for this position consists of children in grades 1-6.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with children in a group setting.
- Ability to accept guidance and supervision.
- Ability to assist in teaching/leading activities.
- Enthusiasm, patience, and self-control.
- Ability to adapt to the camp setting.
- Prior camp experience
- Experienced swimmer (required)
Desired Skills:
- Experience with outdoor education and environmental programs.
- Knowledge of child development and best practices in youth work.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Passion for working with children and creating positive learning experiences.
