SUMMARY
The Senior Director of Communications & Marketing (SDCM) is responsible for leading the Communications & Marketing team in developing and executing communications strategies for both internal and external communications, including marketing, media relations, digital, social media, email, video, and advertising, in alignment with Planned Parenthood Arizona’s (PPAZ) mission and strategic goals. In partnership with the CEAO, the senior director will enhance PPAZ’s visibility, image, and influence in Arizona by crafting the agency’s integrated communications and marketing strategy and overall messages to engage patients, partner organizations, media, decision makers, the general public, and funders. Furthermore, the Senior Director of Communications & Marketing is responsible for the development, management, direction, and administration of policies and programs related to all phases of marketing, image, and brand protection and enhancement, both internally and externally. The ideal candidate will have an understanding of advocacy, public policy, health care, education, and/or social justice work.

Strategy and Administration
• Serve as a member of the External Affairs senior leadership team, collaborating to set the strategic direction of the EA Department.
• Manage and support the development of a small team of professionals in communications and marketing.
• Manage department budget of roughly $195,000 with support from Finance, to ensure fiscal responsibility and spending that drives key performance indicators.
• Point person for Planned Parenthood Federation of America and Planned Parenthood Action Fund communications team and work closely with national staff to create alignment between national and affiliate message goals including those targeting Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, LGBTQ , and economically disadvantaged populations, etc.
• Regularly interact with senior management staff, consultants, other affiliates and the Planned Parenthood Federation of America national office.
• Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities may include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; supervising, planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
• Builds and maintains relationships with stakeholders across departments, serving as credible source of information, reliable partner in work, and consultant on projects being led by other departments.
DIRECT RESPONSIBILITIES
Public Relations/Media
• Create and manage implementation of the strategic communications plan.
• Direct President/CEO, members of the Board of Directors, Senior Staff and designated spokespeople in crisis communications and rapid response efforts.
• Supervise Agency media events, contacts and activities.
• Develop and execute a full media relations strategy. Includes actions items such as:
a) Cultivate and maintain relationships with targeted media with an equity and inclusion lens.
b) Assist in the development of media content for multiple media platforms.
c) Develop press releases, talking points, message documents and statements
d) Implement and manage media campaigns as strategically advised. Track related metrics and report out on results.
e) Serve as agency spokesperson as warranted.
f) Prepare media materials for proactive media outreach or in response to inquiries.
Marketing/Branding
• Create and manage implementation of the strategic marketing plan.
• Protect and maintain the PPAZ brand, including working in partnership with other departments to ensure that all collateral materials (including signage) meet content standards and style guidelines.
• Analyze and incorporate data, polling, and research into communications and marketing strategy and provide high-level messaging and research counsel to organizational leadership
• Identify, evaluate, and execute opportunities that increase PPAZ’s visibility among key audiences.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Internal Communication
• Work collaboratively with other members of the organization's leadership to craft and execute an effective and impact-oriented integrated communications and marketing strategy for the agency. Utilize survey research and other tools to evaluate program efficacy and update strategy periodically.
• Leads internal communications efforts including a biweekly/monthly newsletter.
• Support the CEAO, the President/CEO, and other spokespeople in ways that increase organizational visibility and impact.
• Special projects as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
• Passionate commitment to the mission, vision and values of PPAZ.
• Bachelor’s Degree in English, communications, journalism, marketing, or public policy preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.
• Proven ability to effectively communicate with diverse audiences, including the media, legislators, donors, partner organizations and broader engagement with supporters and the general public.
• At least 5-7 years of experience with increasing responsibility and leadership in communications and/or brand marketing required.
• Minimum 3 years of experience and demonstrated success in building high-performing teams, managing staff, and facilitating their professional development.
• Minimum 2-3 years’ experience working in collaboration with board members, donors, supporters and others.
• Proven expertise in using communications and brand marketing to effectively engage diverse audiences with cultural humility is required–particularly within PPAZs priority constituencies (Black, Latinx, young people, immigrants, and LGBTQ ).
• Exceptional writing and editing skills. Demonstrated ability to handle controversial issues and to translate technical health and policy information to broad audiences.
• Successful experience in developing, managing, and evaluating strategic campaigns that produce results in the areas of issue-based advocacy and/or health care.
• Deep understanding of social justice, including oppression and racial equity, and how these concepts impact people’s ability to access sexual and reproductive health care.
• Fluency in integrated communications and brand marketing strategies and efforts, including traditional media, advertising, video, marketing, digital and online media.
• Direct experience with message strategy and development, including a record of success creating and implementing communications and marketing strategies.
• Strong relationships with local media and progressive organizations in Arizona.
• Demonstrated understanding of how race dynamics impact supervisory relationships, organizational culture, and internal and external partnerships, and can demonstrate a history of successfully intervening in problematic dynamics and deepening a racial equity approach within an organization or team.
• Excellent relationship building, including a high level of self-awareness, empathy, and humility in interpersonal interactions.
• A demonstrated ability to work and build trust across cultural differences as well as to effectively communicate across differences.
• Track record of building strong relationships and working collaboratively across teams.
• Availability to work flexible hours, including weekend and evening as required.
• Organizational skills are required, and project management experience is preferred.
