Heavy Equipment Mechanic / Outside Machinist General Scope: Heavy Equipment Mechanic / Outside Machinist has basic knowledge of proper use of hand and power tools to assemble parts according to instruction.
Heavy Equipment Mechanic / Outside Machinist Position Summary:
Knowledge and experience with layout work from blueprints, schematics or drawings to place parts in specified relationship to each other.
Experience and ability to use bolts, clips, screws or otherwise to fasten parts together using common hand tools or specialized tools and equipment to accomplish a finished mechanical part on a larger railroad maintenance machinery.
Experience and knowledge of use of common tools, tapes, squares and levels both standard and metric.
Assists in installation, lifting, positioning, and fastening objects such as sub-frames, cylinders, pumps and motors with tools, while understanding the workings of these machines to ensure the machine is constructed correctly.
Ability to work independently or with a team to complete the work order by assembling systems or mechanical parts on a Plasser American machine.
maintains tools and equipment and keeps supplies and parts in order.
ability to learn to disassemble machinery for rebuild or overhaul.
assists with the loading and un-loading equipment with the use of a forklift, railroad machinery or other heavy equipment.

Heavy Equipment Mechanic / Outside Machinist Education: At least three years related work experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Heavy Equipment Mechanic / Outside Machinist Knowledge: Incumbent must have proficient knowledge in the following areas:
Blueprints
Proper use of hand and power tools.
Mechanical Assembly
Heavy Equipment Mechanic / Outside Machinist Skills: Incumbent must demonstrate or participate in internal/external training programs to obtain the following skills:

5 to 7 years of experience as a heavy Equipment Mechanic / Outside Machinist
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
Ability to read, and interpret, electrical schematic drawings, and engineering blueprints.
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to perform these operations using units of weight measurement, volume, and distance.
Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
May be required to operate material handling equipment.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Capable of working in a team environment.
