Job Summary
We are seeking an individual for the position of Chemical Engineer. This position involves planning, scheduling, progress, and difficulties encountered on projects or work assignments. Requires knowledge and involvement with plant maintenance, energy usage, backup utility systems, chemical systems, process control systems, instrumentation, and equipment used throughout the plant such as kettle reactors, mixers, grinders, rolls, and extruders.
Responsibilities
- Acquires and maintains working knowledge of Company equipment and processing procedures to provide insight and expertise for possible improvements and to optimize processes in assigned areas. Conceives and submits ideas to Director of Plant Engineering & Maintenance for improvements to quality, safety, productivity, and cost reduction initiatives.
- Manages engineering projects assigned, including design, specifications, approvals, equipment and material purchases, installation and startup. Guides Technicians and Maintenance personnel with specific instructions during all project phases. Maintains project priorities based on Company goals and requirements.
- Works with other Engineering disciplines and staff on design projects. Coordinates projects between departments. Recommends changes in procedures, design or equipment where necessary and appropriate. Designs Resin chemical plant equipment and devises processes for manufacturing resins and related products. Conducts assigned research projects approved by Management to develop new and improved chemical manufacturing processes to potentially reduce costs. Facilitates implementation of approved options.
- Maintains current understanding of the computerized control systems and data collection systems used in Production Departments. Ensures continued expertise through periodic in-house or external training.
- Obtains data from systems to perform investigation of process problems, as needed. Retrieves and organizes system data, and prepares reports to assist with the investigation and determination of the problem and potential solutions. Reviews history of Operator Action Journals when a problem occurs and provides engineering reports to Management.
- Determines changes needed to control systems’ configuration and programming. Evaluates recommended changes before implementation to ensure system integrity. Requests input and assistance from any departments or personnel needed. Formulates input and various opinions into a best solution plan and works with all levels of management and staff as required to develop and implement changes.
- Helps with system development work for the Production systems. Designs or helps design screen graphics and/or complete control systems.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering
- 3 years of work experience desired; recent graduates will be considered
- Proficient with MS Office. AutoCAD
- Working knowledge of ISO 9001 and quality system processes and requirements
- Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and methodologies within chemical engineering
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and projects
- Ability to work as part of a team or independently with minimal supervision
