A dental hygiene certification from an accredited institution is mandatory. Additionally, maintaining annual training in OSHA, HIPAA, BLS, and infection control protocols is essential.

- Verify and document patient health history
- Educate patients on oral hygiene, health, and disease management
- Perform clinical hygiene functions, including exposing diagnostic x-rays, taking blood pressure, and conducting adult and child prophylaxis
- Collaborate with the dentist to assess possible restorative treatments
