One of the nation’s premier private event venues is looking for a conscientious and reliable groundskeeper to contribute to helping us maintain and enhance our 40 acres of grounds, gardens, woodlands, farm, and historical chateau.

As a groundskeeper, you will be responsible for providing professional and courteous groundskeeping, landscaping, and horticultural services, caring for our gardens and grounds, indoor plants, and equipment to ensure that we look our best.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Duties will be assigned according to current projects in progress. Work may involve some or all of the following tasks:
  • Watering, weeding, seeding, and mulching.
  • Planting, dividing, and transplanting trees, shrubs, groundcovers, and herbaceous plants
  • Cultivating and fertilizing.
  • Arboricultural work, including removal of dead wood, structural pruning, and the removal of dead or declining plants.
  • Hedge trimming. Edging beds. Brush cutting.
  • Removing litter, twigs, leaves, and other material from assigned and adjacent areas.
  • Farming duties including clearing/tilling/preparing soils, planting, tending, and hand harvesting.
  • Greenhouse maintenance including plant care, consistent watering, seed starting, plant propagation, and cleaning/disease hygiene.
  • Routine live chicken care and coop maintenance.
  • Cutting and transporting wood by operating a wood splitting machine.
  • Plowing and shoveling snow in winter. Leaf clearing in fall.
  • Invasive species surveillance and control. Monitoring and controlling threatening insects, diseases, and nuisance animals.
  • Learn, understand, and demonstrate the ability to safely operate tools and equipment used in daily work. This may include safely and properly using and mixing pesticides.
  • Maintaining streams, ponds, and riparian areas.
  • Assist in preparing and maintaining gardens and grounds for special events, exhibitions, and other large-scale grounds projects.
  • Other duties as assigned.

DESIRED SKILLSETS:

  • Ability to operate small, powered equipment and use landscaping-related hand tools.
  • A knowledge of proper plant care and horticultural practices is strongly preferred.
  • Sufficient communication skills to understand and respond to directions from management
  • Proactive and reliable self-driven personality.
  • A natural helper who is eager to assist wherever needed and interest in developing horticultural knowledge and skills.
  • High attention to detail and able to grasp instructions easily.
  • A high degree personal pride with a clean presentable appearance or good hygiene.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education/Formal Training High school diploma or equivalent is preferred. Ability to read/write and speak English sufficiently enough to perform the job and have basic communication with management and your colleagues is required.
  • Experience. Previous experience as a groundskeeper for a botanical garden, arboretum, public park, or college/university is preferred.
  • Knowledge/Skills Working knowledge of landscaping equipment, proper plant care, and general horticulture is strongly preferred.
  • Availability Must be available to work early shifts on weekdays and weekend. Must have reliable transportation. As part of the snow clearing team, your ability to commute to work during storm events (within reason and safety) is expected.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:

  • The Groundskeeper will report directly to the Grounds Manager.
  • Must be willing to welcome additional direction from Ownership, General Manager, and other key management.
  • Will be expected to work collaboratively and cordially with a small team of fellow Groundskeepers.
  • Must be vocal and timely in alerting the Grounds Manager to any potential issues with guest experiences, grounds safety, and/or equipment issues to anticipate potential problems and aid in their solutions.

Please note that this position requires significant physical demands for active mobility.

  • Must have senses of vision and hearing in the normal range, with or without correction. Sense of touch and the ability to wear personal protective equipment is required.
  • Must have mobility to walk through the extent of the grounds and facilities; job duties will frequently require surefootedness on unpaved, sloped, and loose soils.
  • Work Environment: Work is primarily performed outdoors in . May have exposure to heat, cold, loud or prolonged noise, and/or vibration.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and be able to carry landscaping equipment and supplies.
  • Must be able to walk and stand for extended periods of time, and comfortably climb stairs and ladders. Work will require bending, pushing, pulling, standing, walking, kneeling, and traveling by vehicles.
  • Must be comfortable operating basic machinery and powered gardening tools.
  • Equipment Use: Hand gardening tools including loppers, pruning shears, rake, saw, shovel; power equipment including backpack blower, chain saw, edger, lawn mower, rototiller, weed whip, and similar tools; Vehicles use includes Cushman/golf cart, pick-up truck, plow truck, and similar.
