Plum is a dynamic, high growth Dental Partnership Organization (DPO) with 30 locations in RI and eastern CT supporting over 350 total employees. The Company's affiliated dental practices provide comprehensive general, specialty and cosmetic dental care to over 80,000 patients annually. As a DPO, we are responsible for managing all administrative support functions of the dental practices including marketing, facilities, HR, insurance, accounting, billing, etc. so that dentists can focus on treating patients and not have to worry about the nuts and bolts of running or maintaining a practice.
The Opportunity

As a State Operations Director, you’ll play a critical leadership role overseeing the performance of all dental practices within your state. You’ll be responsible for driving profitable growth, developing high-performing teams, and ensuring exceptional patient experiences. Working closely with the State Clinical Director, you’ll help foster clinical excellence and consistency across practices, while also leading efforts in provider recruitment, onboarding, and market expansion. Reporting directly to the VP of Operations and collaborating with a passionate, agile management team, you’ll gain hands-on experience running a high-growth, acquisitive healthcare services company—an ideal role for a driven leader looking to make a lasting impact and grow with the business.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Collaboration
- Partner with the State Clinical Director to support provider engagement, quality care delivery, and clinical team development.
- Collaborate to improve provider onboarding, retention, and performance through joint operational and clinical strategies.
Doctor Recruitment & Onboarding
- Lead local efforts to recruit, hire, and onboard general dentists and specialists to meet patient demand.
- Ensure a best-in-class onboarding experience that fosters long-term provider retention and success.
Operational Leadership & Performance
- Lead all non-clinical operations across practices in the assigned state, ensuring alignment with Plum Dental’s mission, values, and performance standards.
- Own the state-level P&L and manage to financial goals including revenue growth, expense management, and margin improvement.
- Identify operational opportunities and implement strategies to drive efficiency, productivity, and scalability.
Team Development & Practice Support
- Lead, mentor, and develop Practice Managers and Senior Practice Managers to build strong, self-sufficient leaders capable of running high-performing practices.
- Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement across the region.
- Ensure effective implementation of standard operating procedures and company initiatives at the practice level.
Growth & Market Development
- Support market expansion initiatives including practice de novos, affiliations, and strategic partnerships.
- Partner with the Business Development and Integration teams to ensure smooth onboarding and integration of new practices.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Collaborate with the Shared Services Team functions (HR, Finance, Marketing, Revenue Cycle, etc.) to ensure practices are supported effectively.
- Serve as the primary liaison between practices and support departments, communicating needs, resolving issues, and driving initiatives.
Qualifications:
- 7 years of progressive leadership experience in multi-site healthcare, dental, retail, or service-based operations.
- Experience managing a P&L and leading large, geographically dispersed teams.
- Strong leadership, coaching, and interpersonal skills.
- Experience with provider or clinician management preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree required; MBA or MHA a plus.
- Willingness to travel within the assigned state
Compensation
- Salary and annual bonus dependent on background and level of experience
- The ceiling is high at Plum – we are a young and lean company and there will be new opportunities that develop as we grow; salary can increase considerably (and potentially include equity) as you develop and take on additional responsibility
