Mechanical Systems Engineer

As a member of the technical staff, the Mechanical Systems Engineer is responsible for the design and buildout of complete robotic solutions for logistics and e-commerce applications. This position requires the engineer to travel occasionally to client facilities to supervise, survey, install, and adjust new customer equipment, demonstrating empathy for the customer and problem-solving communication skills.


Essential Functions

  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
    Participate in the design and acquisition of mechanical components to build innovative and novel solutions to fulfill the customer’s needs.
  • Perform reach and load analyses using CAD software (Solidworks, RoboGuide, MotoSim, or Visual Components) to specify the appropriate robot for a given application, (reach, payload, number of joints, tooling.)
  • Intermediate Solidworks user. Ability to efficiently use Solidworks Part, Assembly, and drawing tools, configurations, and custom property tabs.
  • Participate in and facilitate design reviews specific to mechanical structures and hardware layout.
  • Model full system CAD, including hardware, cable lengths, HMI buttons and labels, guarding, etc.
  • Design end of arm tooling for robots using grasping and vacuum methods.
  • Work hand in hand with controls engineers to develop the optimal system layout, sensor bracketry designs, and robot work envelope.
  • Produce BOMs and part/assembly prints that are accurate and represent the “as built” system.
  • Produce as-installed documentation for customer and sub-contractor use.
  • Specify and source conveyance components given an estimated package distribution and product flow rates.
  • Work with Senior engineers to load balance tasking, making frequent pivots throughout the week to allow the engineering team to remain agile and reactive to new engineering challenges.
  • Take rough “proof of concept” models from the applications engineering team and drive the design to completion.
  • Experience working with system safety fencing. Familiarity with operator safety standards.  Able to design and evaluate machine safety.
  • Well versed with the metric system with familiarity with various types of common fasteners and bolted connections.
  • Experience using pneumatics or hydraulics (push-to-connect fittings, pneumatic cylinders and flow controls, vacuum generators, etc.) with an understanding of how to plumb these components and create pneumatic diagrams

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering or a related field w/3 years of experience; or 6 years work experience.
  • Experience using 3D parametric CAD software.
  • Experience working with robotic automation and assembling complex systems.
  • Experience communicating with manufacturers using engineering drawings and technical documentation.
  • Basic mechanical assembly skills using hand tools, drilling and tapping, basic fabrication skills.
  • Familiar with the major robot brands and have a good understanding of how a robot works and is used.
  • Experience working on multiple projects simultaneously. 

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Experience with any of the following:
  • 2 years of logistics/automation system integration experience or experience in a related field
  • Programming and Configuration:
  • Visual Components or similar factory simulation software
  • Have a basic understanding of Python, VBA, or other scripting languages
  • Familiar with SMC & Festo pneumatic products
  • Software Experience: Windows, Linux (Ubuntu), Microsoft Office, Gitlab
  • Certifications such as: PE, PMP, Six Sigma, Agile
  • Ability to use AutoCAD for simple 2D site layouts and use 3D viewers such as eDrawings or similar.

Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and cameras. This position will also have occasional work in the warehouse, either in our facility or our customer's. While performing the duties of this job, the engineer may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an intern to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.


Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
Full time, 40 hours/week between M-F, 9:00am-6:00pm. 


Travel
Project-based intermittent overnight travel, up to two weeks at a time during deployment phase. International travel will require a valid passport and the ability to travel unrestricted to the EU. Up to 50%


Salary and Benefits

The salary for this role is dependent on experience. The range for this role is $120,000 - $147,000 per year and is a bonus eligible position.
