Summary
Assists Environmental Technician and seasonal Natural Resources Officers in maintenance and conservation activities at Town owned beaches as well as the communication to the general public of rules, regulations and by-laws governing the use of those areas. Assists in the monitoring and protection of shorebird nesting activities.
Essential Functions

Performs manual work in the maintenance and conservation of Town owned coastal beaches including fencing installation and maintenance, beach vegetation planting, litter pickup and any other related work.
Assists in monitoring/protection of shorebird nesting activities including night patrol shifts.
Inspects vehicles at Plymouth beaches for proper permits and/or stickers.
Communicates and explains pertinent rules, regulations and by-laws to beach visitors.
Responds to emergencies and renders first aid.
Performs various duties following established procedures which require limited judgement in determination of the appropriate course of action.
Performs similar or related work as required, directed or as situation dictates.
Supervision Received and Exercised
Works under the direct supervision of the Environmental Technician and seasonal Natural Resources Officers.
Qualifications
Education, Training and Experience
High School diploma or equivalent.
Knowledge: Knowledge of basic ecological principles and local geography. Knowledge, or ability to obtain working knowledge of local beach bylaws, management plan and permit requirements, and state and federal guidelines for protection of shorebirds on multi-use recreational beach.
Ability: Ability to work with tools. Ability to keep written records. Ability to communicate with the general public. Ability to lift heavy materials and work under varying weather conditions. Ability to work collaboratively with a team as well as independently with minimal direct supervision. Ability to walk up to 5 miles per day for patrols and maintenance and protection activities.
Skill: Skill in use of hand tools, small power equipment, cellular phone and four wheel drive vehicles. Strong people skills.
Licensing/Certifications:
Massachusetts Class D Driver’s License. Basic Life Support, CPR and AED, and First Aid Certifications (or ability to obtain).
Job Environment
Work is performed outdoors, with exposure to various and often unpleasant weather conditions. Work includes nights and weekends.
Errors could result in endangering environmentally sensitive locations and personal injury.
