TITLE: IV Pharmacy Technician
REPORTS TO: Pharmacist / IV Pharmacy Manager
EXPECTATIONS OF WORK HOURS: Fulltime, must be available to work any shifts to cover pharmacy’s hours of operation
General descriptions: Follows the duties of the Pharmacy Technician as stated by the California State Board of Pharmacy. The IV Pharmacy Technicianunder supervision of a Registered Pharmacist and pursuant to specific Board of Pharmacy defined technician tasks, which may include, accurately filling prescriptions, preparing Sterile Compounding medications, and entering computer data, following standard procedures and regulatory requirements.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Works under direct supervision of a Registered Pharmacist, fills prescriptions and prepares Sterile Compounding according to Polaris Pharmacy Services standards of quality, customer service, productivity guidelines and State Board of Pharmacy regulations.
- Communicate with insurance carriers and perform Error Resolution
- Responsible for compounding Sterile Compounding orders as directed by Pharmacists, IV Supervisor, and/or Pharmacy Manager.
- Responsible for data entry and to assist pharmacist with calling long term care facilities for refill orders.
- Must document all communications, dates and descriptions on patient IV charts, Docutrack and QS1
- Must present to pharmacist all IV compounded drugs for Pre- and Post- checks
- Must alert pharmacist when labs are needed or provided by the facilities
- Maintain paper chart orders, drug compounding work order, labs and any communications
- Maintain Compounded Drug Record in QS1 and Paper Charts with lot numbers, Expiration Dates, NDC’s and Quantities Used.
- Responsible for maintaining, cleaning and accountability of pumps. Must know how to program all pumps. Must know what needs to be done and sent to long term care facilities when sending a pump.
- Responsible for filing, answering phones, and stocking areas in the IV department as appropriate and as directed by supervisor.
- Works with Lead IV Technician in maintaining a clean/safe work environment, checking equipment for calibration, safety, and cleanliness.
- Cleaning up after completion of compounding, weekly and monthly cleaning according to USP 797
- Maintenance of cleaning, temperature and pressure logs in accordance with USP 797
- Keep up with testing requirements per USP 797
- Responsible for replenishment and maintenance of Emergency Drug Kits (EDK) provided to Long Term Care Facilities
- Responsible for communicating with Pharmacist or Supervisor, or Lead Technician with any concerns regarding USP 797 and Operations.
- Customer Service
- Check stock shelfs for Expired Products and pull out the expired products and place in Expired Product bins
- Make sure to order drug supply as needed and keep good stock of all meds
- Responsible for shipping and tracking orders as needed
- Performs other tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- LTC experience preferred
- Order entry and insurance billing experience required
- Pharmacy Technician Certification desired
- Must be able to work weekends
- Data entry skills, detail oriented, ability to multi-task
- Minimum 6-months pharmacy technician experience required
- Experience with medications, IV’s and filling prescriptions required
- Must be available to work Monday-Friday with rotating weekends
REQUIRED LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Technician License, California State Board of Pharmacy
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Standing, walking throughout facility, light lifting, some driving using own vehicle
