The primary role of a dietician is assessing the nutritional needs of residents, developing personalized meal plans that cater to their dietary restrictions and preferences, considering their medical history, and monitoring their nutritional status to ensure they are receiving adequate nutrition while managing any potential dietary concerns related to their health conditions; they often collaborate with other healthcare professionals within the facility to provide optimal care.


Responsibilities:

Nutritional assessments:

Conduct comprehensive nutritional assessments of residents, including dietary history, anthropometric measurements, lab values, and physical observations to identify potential malnutrition or dietary issues.

Meal planning:

Create individualized meal plans based on residents' dietary needs, medical conditions, allergies, preferences, and textures (e.g., pureed, soft, mechanical).

Dietary restrictions management:

Address specific dietary restrictions like diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, food allergies, and cultural/religious dietary needs.

Menu development:

Collaborate with the food service team to develop menus that meet the nutritional needs of residents while considering their preferences and variety.

Nutrition education:

Provide nutrition education to residents, families, and staff regarding dietary changes, food choices, and healthy eating habits.

Weight monitoring:

Regularly monitor resident weight and body composition to identify potential nutritional problems and adjust meal plans accordingly.

Collaboration with healthcare team:

Work closely with nurses, doctors, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate resident care and address any nutritional concerns.

Documentation and reporting:

Maintain accurate and detailed documentation of nutritional assessments, meal plans, progress notes, and any dietary interventions.


Must Have Qualities:

Compassionate and patient demeanor: Ability to provide care with empathy and understanding towards residents' needs.

Physical strength and dexterity: To safely assist residents with transfers and personal care activities.


Attention to detail: Accurately recording resident information and observations.

Basic medical knowledge: Understanding medical terminology and basic nursing procedures.

Teamwork skills: Collaborating effectively with other healthcare staff to provide quality care.
