What are the responsibilities and job description for the Food and Agriculture Reporter position at POLITICO?
POLITICO is seeking an experienced journalist to cover food and agriculture policy, a dynamic beat tackling a wide range of issues including farm subsidies, nutrition, food safety, immigration, climate change and the future of the world’s food supply.
This reporter will help us cover issues on Capitol Hill and across Washington related to food and agriculture, including the USDA budget, negotiations over the next farm bill, and the social safety net. You’ll write for all platforms of POLITICO with a mix of dailies for a plugged-in professional audience and strong enterprise stories for a general-interest audience. You will also contribute to our popular daily newsletter, Morning Agriculture.
At least three years of professional journalism experience is required, with a strong track record of delivering high-impact scoops and revelatory enterprise. Journalistic experience in covering the federal government, the farm bill, congressional rural policy and/or agribusiness is helpful. Please include in your application a resume, a cover letter summarizing your interest and qualifications for the beat and at least five journalistic writing samples (preferably PDFs or publicly accessible links).
What You’ll Need:
- Strong beat experience. We’re looking for evidence of dominating on a beat through frequent scoops and enterprise.
- Writing chops. Flair and style are required; readers will be paying to read your writing. The ability to write analytically is a must -- with authority but not opinion.
- Initiative. A demonstrated track record of developing a network of sources both in and out of Washington is critical.
- Team spirit. You must be able to work as part of a team and collaborate on beat coverage and in-depth pieces.
