Under general supervision ensures the protection, welfare, safety, custody and control of inmates incarcerated in the Polk County Jail.

Illustrative Examples of Work

• Maintains control and internal security of the Polk County Jail through active and continuous interaction with the inmates in the housing units, and through visual monitoring from the restricted access control rooms.
• Provides for the inmates basic needs, physical safety, well-being, sanitary conditions, and ensures that pre-trial rights are adhered to.
• Effectively applies positive or negative reinforcement for inmates who violate the Polk County Jail inmate rules and regulations.
• Responds in a calm, confident and organized manner to emergency situations arising from fire, egress alarms, duress alarms, altercations, or medical emergencies.
• Identifies serious or life threatening medical conditions, makes the appropriate notifications, and administers basic first aid and / or life-saving aid.
• Selects, completes, internally disseminates, and maintains records for a variety of Polk County Jail manual and computer generated reports.
• Performs a variety of duties such as housing unit officer, control room, exercise, visitation, intake and discharge, classification, jail review, disciplinary hearing officer, fingerprinting, or any other related duties as may be required.
• Performs searches of inmates and inmate areas on a regular basis and on unannounced irregular intervals.

This position requires all applicants to be at least 18 years of age or older. Do you meet this requirement?

You must be a high school graduate and possess a high school diploma or an equivalency certificate (GED). You will be required to submit a copy of your transcripts or diploma. Can you provide this documentation?

This position requires working one of the following three shifts : 7 : 30 a.m. to 4 : 00 p.m., 3 : 30 p.m. to 12 : 00 a.m., or 11 : 30 p.m. to 8 : 00 a.m., with the majority of the days off scheduled during the weekdays. Would you be able to meet this job requirement?

This position includes long periods of standing and walking, responding to emergencies, and physically restraining inmates / residents, can you meet these requirements?

You may be required to work with inmates who have communicable diseases, such as AIDS, Tuberculosis, Hepatitis, etc., are you willing to do this?

You may be required to work, by yourself, in a housing unit to supervise the activities of unrestrained inmates, can you meet this requirement?

Are you willing to use force, when necessary, to fulfill the duties of the Detention Officer position, as applicable to the Code of Iowa?
