Under limited supervision, performs skilled electrical work in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical systems and equipment, independently and as part of team to support county facilities and projects. This role ensures that all electrical components comply with safety regulations and operate efficiently.

Illustrative Examples of Work

  • Plans proposed electrical installations from specifications, blueprints, sketches, or diagrams; installs, maintains, and repairs electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures according to relevant code; determines size of transformers, types, sizes, and qualities of wire, panel boards, outlet boxes, switchboxes, pull boxes and other equipment necessary to carry the load demands and requirements; may install wiring for phone systems and computer networking.
  • Performs regular inspections and preventative maintenance on electrical systems, identifying and diagnoses malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components to resolve issues.
  • Replaces outdated or malfunctioning electrical components with energy-efficient systems and ensure all installations comply with updated codes and regulations.
  • Estimates material and equipment required for the installation, repair, and / or replacement of electrical wiring and equipment; responsible for placing purchase orders and projecting cost estimations.
  • Maintains records of work performed, including materials used, time spent on jobs, and equipment serviced or repaired.
  • Assists in planning or completing energy conservation projects or tasks as needed; may provide oversight of contracted electricians performing work in County facilities.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of electrical codes, standards, and regulations in the City of Des Moines, State of Iowa, and National electrical codes.
  • Knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, and materials used in the electrical trade.
  • Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions and protocols in the electrical trade including lockout tag out procedures.
  • Skill in the use of the standard tools and equipment of the electrical trade including test equipment.
  • Skill in locating and correcting defects in electrical systems, machinery, and equipment.
  • Ability to safely work with high voltage equipment and systems up to 600 volts.
  • Ability to interpret and work from sketches and blueprints.
  • Ability to estimate costs for electrical materials and supplies.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 65 pounds.
  • Ability to safely operate various lifts including fork lift, Tommy lift, boom, scissor lift, and genie lift.
  • Ability to climb ladders and walk on uneven surfaces.
  • Ability to work at elevations of up to 100 feet.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather and work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to stand or kneel for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to distinguish colors of electrical wires.
  • Ability to stoop, bend, twist, squat, kneel, push, pull, and reach.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees, contractors, and the general public, fostering a collaborative and professional work environment.
  • Training and Experience

  • State of Iowa Electrical License issued by the State of Iowa Licensing Board, and
  • Completion of an electrician apprenticeship training program, in accordance with Iowa Code Chapter 103, and
  • Four years of full-time experience as a journey level commercial / industrial electrician, and
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience that will have provided the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Special Requirements :

  • Candidate must pass a post-employment offer physical examination and physical capacity testing to ensure candidate meets the essential physical requirements of the position.
  • Certification in the operation of forklifts is required within six months of employment.
  • A criminal background check is required.
  • A drug screen is required prior to final offer of employment.
  • A valid State of Iowa driver's license is required.
