Exceptional Children Teacher

Job Summary: To create learning experiences that make subject matter meaningful for Exceptional Children.
 
Essential Functions:
 
  1. Implement and follow state regulation guidelines in student initial referral process.
  2. Summarize psychological/educational evaluation and cooperatively create Individualized Education Plan goals at IEP Team conference.
  3. Coordinate and inform IEP Team members of weekly CARE team meetings.
  4. Maintain individual student progress portfolios.
  5. Maintain accurate daily progress notes of each student's performance for assessment.
  6. Incorporate each student's Individual Education Plan goals into individualized daily lesson plans, which is compatible with the NC Standard Course of Study, school, and county curricular goals.
  7. Utilize and complete all DEC State forms as instructed by NC State Guidelines Procedures Manual.
  8. Assess behavioral plans daily.
  9. Maintain and update EOG testing modification list.
  10. Maintain and update each EC student's Individualized Education Plan.
  11. Maintain frequent communication with parents and proper documentation.
  12. Maintain and update SIMS forms.
  13. Schedule and coordinate annual Individual Education Plan review conference for EC students, parents, and IEP team.
  14. Maintain daily contact with classroom teachers to discuss EC students' previous day's classroom performance and possible need for remediation in the EC classroom during special education instructional time.
  15. Provide and implement the portfolio and academic checklist as an alternate form of assessment.
  16. Provide and coordinate classroom activities and strategies for classroom teachers to incorporate into their classroom instruction for EC students.
  17. Understand the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline taught and create learning experiences that make these aspects of subjects matter meaningful for EC students.
  1. Present lessons that are aligned to Individualized Education plan goals, NC Standard Course of Study and provide materials for implementing lessons.  Lessons include review, introduction, presentations, relevant examples, and necessary modification, clear assignments, summarization, and evaluation.
  2. Provide prompt feedback on the correctness or incorrectness of student's work.
  3. Understand how students differ in their approaches to learning and creates instructional opportunities that are adapted to diverse learners.
  4. Understand and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage student development of critical thinking, problem solving and performance skills.
  5. Use an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning and self-motivation.
  6. Use knowledge of effective verbal, nonverbal and media communication techniques to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the EC classroom.
  7. Maintain a high level of student time-on task.
  8. Establish a set of rules and procedures that govern student behavior and administrative matters.
  9. Frequently monitor the behavior of all students during wholeclass, small group, seatwork activities, and during transitions between instructional activities; stop inappropriate behavior promptly and consistently, yet maintain the dignity of the student.
  10. Understand how children learn and develop, and provide learning opportunities that support a child's intellectual, social and personal development.
  11. Maintain clear, firm, and reasonable work standards and due dates.
  12. Foster relationships with school colleagues, parents, and agencies in the larger community to support EC students' learning and well being.
  13. Ensure that all paperwork is completed within required time-lines.
  14. Serve as leader for the IEP Team.
  • Schedule meetings.
  • Prepare agendas.
  • Notify team members.
  • Facilitate the process. 
 
Other Functions:
1.   Other duties as assigned by the principal.
 
Education, experience and skills required:
  1. Have or be eligible for NC licensure in Exceptional Children.
  2. Previous experience with students with special needs preferred.
Terms of Employment: 10 months – Teacher Salary Scale
Evaluation:
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provision of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Teachers.
