Job Summary: To assess the needs and provide quality instruction and learning opportunities for exceptional children through a variety of settings and instructional procedures.
Essential Functions:
1. Plan/implement instruction for students according to their exceptional children classifications, IEP goals and state testing goals.
2. Interpret test data, behavioral assessment scales and maintain knowledge of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study in grades 6-8 in order to assist the planning of instruction and writing IEP’s (Individual Educational Plans) for students identified as exceptional.
3. Write IEP’s and maintain all other exceptional children’s paperwork required by state and federal guidelines.
4. Regularly apprise parents of student progress on IEP goals
5. Schedule Care Team meetings; invite all parties needing to attend any given meeting; maintain Care Team notes on at-risk and exceptional students.
6. Provide daily instruction for students according to placement and service model: self-contained, resource and inclusion.
7. Oversee the maintenance of exceptional children’s program materials and equipment.
8. Identify specific needs of the exceptional children’s program and order appropriately using allotted budget.
9. Effectively manage student behavior.

21. Demonstrate an understanding that flexibility is a key element in the successful operation of a school.
22. Work collaboratively and respectfully with teacher assistant(s).
Other Functions:
1. Other duties as assigned by the principal.
Education, Experience, and Skills Required:
1. Have or be eligible for NC licensure in Special Education
2. Previous experience with young children preferred.
Terms of Employment: 10 months – Teacher Salary Scale
Evaluation:
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of Board of Education policy, North Carolina statutes, and goals established by the Principal.
Environmental Factors:
This position requires walking and strength and stamina to perform occasional physical restraints on students of various sizes.
