What are the responsibilities and job description for the BEACH, CONSESSIONS, & RENTAL FACILITY ATTENDANT position at Polk County?
Under the supervision of the Program and Outreach Coordinator, the Recreation Attendant is responsible for maintaining operations, collecting rental fees from the general public, and directly assisting park users of all abilities with and using standard and adaptive outdoor recreation equipment at the Athene North Shore Recreation Area. The Attendant also maintains security in County buildings and monitors the use of County facilities during evenings, weekends, or holidays while providing exceptional customer service.
- Greets the public; answers telephone calls; relays messages; directs callers and provides general information to the public in a friendly and responsible manner.
- Performs routine office work, including assisting the public with registrations and reservations, record keeping, etc., as needed.
- Computes fees and collects money from customers.
- Reconciles fees and merchandise sales collected daily and prepares reconciliation reports.
- Assist with special event implementation, programs, and services offered.
- Supervise the use of the Conservation facilities during public hours and when they are privately rented during nonpublic hours.
- Assist Park guests with recreation equipment rentals and process cash, debit, and credit card payments.
- Operate an online rental platform to manage reservations and capture the information required to facilitate the rental process.
- Provide basic instruction and education related to recreational equipment operation and safety.
- Assist Park users of all abilities with transfers on/off equipment, ensure optimal equipment fit, and add adaptations as necessary.
- Collaborates with Athene North Shore Recreation programming staff and community partners with the set-up, use, and clean-up of recreation equipment used for scheduled programming and events.
- Maintains records and contributes to reports related to recreation equipment inventory and use as needed.
- Assist with recreational equipment inventory management and maintenance as necessary.
- Maintains all quality, safety, and/or infection control standards.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
- Ability to utilize excellent professional customer service skills to enhance the Athene North Shore Recreation Area experience and meet the needs of park guests.
- Knowledge of and the ability to communicate park policies, practices, and standards.
- Able to communicate with park guests about park amenities, products, and events.
- Knowledge of general office practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office, web-based calendars, email, audio-visual equipment, and website programs.
- Ability to perform basic accounting and cash handling calculations.
- Knowledge of simple mathematics, including addition, subtraction, and multiplication.
- Ability to monitor activities in County buildings, solve problems, and provide assistance to the general public
- Ability to maintain good working relationships with other employees and the public.
- Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with other County employees and the general public using courtesy, patience, and tact.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Able to sustain stationary position throughout shift.
- Able to move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Knowledge and skills in outdoor recreation, including land and water.
- Knowledge of outdoor recreation safety principles and practices.
- Able to operate kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, canoes, and bicycles/tricycles alongside park users as necessary.
- Knowledge and skills in outdoor recreation activities such as paddling, cross-country skiing, and shooting sports.
- Able to facilitate rental equipment purchases, assist with transfers on and off recreation equipment, and aid with recreation operations on land and water.
- Able to move throughout indoor and outdoor spaces to set up or tear down recreation equipment, assist park users with optimal outdoor recreation use, and maintain a clean environment.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and irregular hours.
- Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, active work environment.

- Graduation from high school or equivalent education, or
- Any equivalent combination of training and experience that will have provided the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Previous customer service experience is preferred but not required.
- Preferred experience facilitating or participating in outdoor recreation activities.
- Preferred experience or interest in working with individuals with disabilities, veterans, or adaptive outdoor recreation.

- Minimally 16 years old.
Special Requirement:
Part-Time Positions:
- A criminal background check is required.
- A valid State of Iowa driver’s license is required.
- Candidate must pass a post-employment offer physical examination and physical capacity testing to ensure the candidate meets the essential physical requirements of the position.
- A drug screen is required.
- CPR/AED and First Aid certification is required within six months.
On-Call and Seasonal Position:
- A criminal background check is required.
- A valid State of Iowa driver’s license is required.
