What are the responsibilities and job description for the CARPENTER position at Polk County?
Under general supervision, performs skilled journey level rough and finish carpentry and/or cabinet work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of County facilities.
- Interprets work orders, blueprints, technical orders, and other specifications to determine project requirements.
- Measures, cuts, shapes, and assembles materials for construction and repair projects.
- Builds frameworks, walls, stairways, partitions, and other structures or fixtures based on specifications; constructs forms for and finishes concrete and cement work.
- Installs and repairs window frames, door frames, drywall, doors, molding, roofs, screens, and other wooden fixtures.
- Performs skilled hand and bench work in a carpentry shop; operates planers, jointers, power saws, routers, and other woodworking equipment with precision and attention to detail.
- Builds and/or repairs cabinets, counters, desktops, shelves, bookcases, and other furniture
- Applies floor coverings, wall coverings, and ceiling and floor tile.
- Provides guidance and direction to staff, answers questions, and provides instruction and assistance on the more difficult tasks. Demonstrates the best methods of doing skilled carpentry work.
- Collaborates with other tradespeople, project leaders, and clients to ensure timely project completion.
- Maintains a clean and organized worksite to promote safety and efficiency.
- Estimates material and labor costs for projects as needed.
- Performs related duties as required.
- Knowledge of the tools, equipment, and materials used in the carpentry trade.
- Knowledge of the hazards involved and safety precautions necessary in the carpentry trade.
- Knowledge of the methods, procedures, and techniques used in the carpentry trade.
- Skill in the use and care of the tools, machinery, and equipment of the carpentry trade.
- Ability to perform the full range of skilled carpentry tasks independently.
- Ability to perform skilled hand and bench work in a carpentry shop.
- Ability to safely operate planers, joiners, power saws, routers, and other woodworking equipment.
- Ability to provide guidance, direction, and instructions to co-workers.
- Ability to understand and follow both verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to interpret and work from sketches, drawings, plans, specifications, and blueprints.
- Ability to plan and layout the proper tasks in proper sequence to complete a construction, maintenance, or repair project.
- Ability to make time and material estimates.
- Ability to perform heavy and varied manual tasks under any type of weather conditions.
- Ability to lift, carry, and maneuver materials and equipment up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to safely operate various lifts including forklift, Tommy lift, boom, scissors lift, and genie lift.
- Ability to erect ladders and work at heights.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees, external contractors, and the general public, fostering a collaborative and professional work environment.
- Graduation from high school, and
- Completion of recognized apprenticeship in carpentry, and
- Two years’ experience in the full range of skilled carpentry tasks including wood shop experience, or
- Five years’ experience in the full range of skilled carpentry tasks including wood shop experience, or
- Any equivalent combination of training and experience that will have provided the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Special Requirements:
- Candidate must pass a post-employment offer physical examination and physical capacity testing to ensure candidate meets the essential physical requirements of the position.
- A drug screen is required prior to final offer of employment.
- A criminal background check is required.
- A valid State of Iowa driver’s license is required.
