The Pomona College Writing Program and Center for Speaking, Writing, and the Image (CSWIM) is seeking a teacher and administrator as Assistant Director. The CSWIM is the central academic resource of the Writing Program, consisting of a diverse and committed team of peer Writing, Speaking, and Image Partners. In support of Pomona College's strategic vision, which cultivates a "creative, holistic and rigorous education" with an "emphasis on building relationships and learning in a diverse community," the CSWIM supports inquiry about writing in the disciplines and across the curriculum.
POSITION SUMMARY : The Assistant Director, College Writing will serve four related core responsibilities : (1) The Assistant Director, College Writing will oversee and coordinate the day-to-day functions, staffing, and student personnel of the Center for Speaking, Writing, and the Image. (2) The Assistant Director, College Writing will support Director of College Writing in providing instructional support for faculty, Gen Ed Writing Intensive and Speaking Intensive related issues, and the overall development, enrichment, and ongoing revision of the Writing Program's vision, mission, and work, including the addition of support in oral and visual communication. (3) The Assistant Director, College Writing will support the ID1 Critical Inquiry Program and writing pedagogy by teaching either a section of an ID1 seminar or ENGL 87 : Writing Theories, Processes, and Practices annually. (4) The Assistant Director, College Writing will support and work with the College's diverse multilingual, international, and first generation student populations in the following ways : training Writing, Speaking, and Image Partners; teaching written and oral communication workshops; instructional support for faculty; and assisting students in the transition to writing at Pomona College (addressing imposter syndrome and helping students adjust to the new communication demands of higher education in the U.S. and in English).
Reporting directly to the Director, College Writing, the Assistant Director, College Writing works independently and collaboratively to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities :
- Supervise student tutors (called Writing and / or Speaking and / or Image Partners) in the CSWIM, typically more than 30 per year.Must complete the bi-annual AB 1825 Sexual Harassment Prevention Training as required by the State of California.
Collaborate with the Director to recruit, hire, train, and supervise Writing and Speaking and Image Partners and Head Writing and Speaking and Image Partners.
QUALIFICATIONS : MA, MFA, or PhD in English, Rhetoric and Composition, TESOL, or another discipline represented at the college. College-level teaching experience is required. Experience in the administration of a writing center or writing across the curriculum program is preferred. Expertise may include writing in the disciplines / writing across the curriculum, writing program administration, sociocultural rhetoric, language diversity, transnational theories of writing, international and multilingual literacies, first generation college writers, multimodal composition, accessible pedagogies, A.I. and writing, and creative writing including but not limited to creative nonfiction and the essay.
REQUIRED HOURS : The regular hours for this full-time position are 8 : 00 a.m. to 5 : 00 p.m., Monday - Friday. Holiday, weekend and evening work hours may be required. Travel may be required. Regular hours may vary due to needs of the College or division.
ADDITIONAL POSITION DETAILS : Full-time, benefits eligible, exempt position. The salary range for this role is between $75,000 to $78,300 yearly, with a competitive benefits package. The specific factors that the organization will consider when offering a salary to an individual will include education, training, prior experience, and performance in prior role. All staff positions are ineligible for visa or permanent resident card sponsorship. As a California employer, Pomona College requires all employees to be residents of California.
