Job Description
Pomona Farming is seeking an EHS Field Safety Specialist to support multiple field operations across the State of California. As the EHS Field Safety Specialist, you will develop, implement, and oversee comprehensive health and safety programs. These programs are designed to ensure the safety of all individuals working on the farm, including farm labor contractors, employees, and visitors. The primary objective of this position is to safeguard employees, customers, and the environment through a hands-on approach, conducting on-site visits to our farming locations and engaging with various levels of management to enhance the company's safety culture. The EHS Field Safety Specialist will collaborate closely with farm labor contractors and employees to establish and implement safety policies, procedures, and protocols while fostering a safety culture in daily operations.
The primary responsibility of the candidate will be ultimately up to the Director of Environmental Health & Safety, but some duties may include:
- Conducts job safety analysis walks, field and shop inspections, harvest, spray, and irrigation activity assessments for system improvements.
- Inspect or evaluate workplace environments, equipment, or practices to ensure compliance with safety standards and government regulations.
- Collaborate with farm labor contractors to ensure they adhere to safety standards, conduct regular safety inspections in the field daily, and ensure compliance with safety regulations.
- Assist with implementation of company safety programs and ensure all field personnel understand and follow proper policies and procedures.
- Participate in updating, developing, and implementing comprehensive health and safety programs and helping oversee them.
- Conduct safety audits and inspections on contractor-managed sites to ensure compliance with safety protocols.
- Foster a positive working relationship with farm labor contractors to enhance the overall safety culture on the farm.
- Lead EHS audits and inspections, developing corrective action plans as needed.
- Assist in building comprehensive management systems that measure compliance and performance and ensure continuous improvement.
- Conduct safety and environmental compliance assessments with third parties for sustainable programs.
- Coach operational managers, field supervisors, employees, and Farm Labor Contractors on proper safety procedures and safety violations.
- Recommend measures to help protect workers from potentially hazardous work methods, processes, or materials.
- Conduct job safety analysis walks, field and shop inspections, and harvest, spray, and irrigation activity assessments to improve system performance.
- Stay informed about industry best practices for farm safety and environmental management, implementing new strategies as necessary.
- Communicate safety-related matters to the company and Farm Labor Contractors using emails, technology devices, tailgate meets, and bulletin boards.
- Investigate incidents to identify causes or determine how such incidents might be prevented.
- Conducted hands-on training, pre-harvest safety training, CPR training, safety-related training, and new training materials and programs.
- Work with labor contractors to track safety incidents and create processes to reduce incidents.
Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:
- Bachelors degree in Environmental Safety, Occupational Safety and Health, or related field required.
- 5 years of relevant experience.
- Bilingual proficiency in written and spoken Spanish.
- Knowledge of environmental regulations and policies.
- Proficient in analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proficient computer skills - Microsoft Office Software.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team to improve farm safety and environmental practices.
- Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills.
Physical Requirements: ·
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Must lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Climb a ladder and walk or stand for long periods.
- Comfortable working near heavy machinery and equipment.
