JOB SUMMARY
The SD Discovery Center (SDDC) is looking for a Teaching Assistant experienced in education or childcare with Child Development Associate (CDA) credentials, or equivalent, to assist with educational programs, specifically connected with expanding STEM and early childhood education initiatives. We seek a passionate and nurturing individual who understands (or is willing to learn) and embraces best practices for teaching and sharing a love of science and exploration to join our team.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
● Responsible for helping the Early Childhood Specialist and STEM Educators complete daily tasks within unique learning environments for PreK-8th grade students
● Must have a great love and patience for children and general knowledge of best practices and more specific early educational methods as well as class management and the ability to engage young students and earn their trust and attention
● Work with students in the areas of science, math, language, reading, etc.
● Help maintain Montessori and hands-on learning environments
● Aides in the management of program activities including lessons, play, breaks and snacks
● Support the distribution of materials and engagement with activities
● Provide appropriate supervision for children at all times
● Develop and maintain positive relationships with children and parents
● Establish and enforce rules of behavior for children in their classrooms and programs
● Track students’ progress
● Maintain a clean and tidy educational spaces
● Work as a part of a team with other staff members and departments to enhance understanding of STEM and SDDC impact
● Communicate via telephone, video conference, email and in-person.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience as an early childhood educator or childcare provider and an understanding of the principles of child development and general teaching methods with Child Development Associate (CDA) credentials, or equivalent. Excellent communication and group management skills. Passion for childhood education, adaptability and patience. Certification in child CPR and first aid preferred. Can be acquired after hiring. The prospective employee must consent to a criminal background check prior to signing a contract.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The person in this position must be able to:
● Navigate office and exhibit hall space to access office machinery, storage shelves, exhibits, etc.
● Load, unload, set up, and tear down program materials weighing up to 50lbs.
● Move about for sustained periods of time while overseeing and participating in program activities that involve youth.
Benefits
COMPENSATION & SCHEDULE
Salaried. Starting at $18 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications. Paid vacation and sick leave, and 5% benefits stipend. Retirement option up to 3% match after 1 year of employment. 40 hours per week; Monday - Friday, with ability to occasionally work outside of regular hours on weekends, evenings, etc. in support of SDDC events and activities.
