Description
The accountant works with various staff to ensure general ledger, financial reports, and budget are managed and maintained per the Tribe’s established policies, procedures, and deadlines.
The position reviews the financial transactions, month end and prepares the monthly financial reports and distributes them to executive team and directors.
This position prepares the bank reconciliations for entities.
This position performs numerous accounting functions to aid in consistent and timely financial recording and reporting across departments.
Responsible for properly accounting for all assets additions, disposals, and transfers.
This is a full-time and exempt position. This position reports to the Finance Director.
Duties and Responsibilities Includes:
General Ledger:
- Reviews, prepares, and posts general journal entries, as needed.
- Prepares and processes payroll and fringe benefit journal entries.
- Reviews monthly financial statements for accuracy before closure.
- Reviews monthly transaction activities for posting errors and correct as necessary.
- Prepares and distributes monthly trial balance and financial statements to directors and managers, and as requested.
- Reconciles General Ledger account balances.
- Reconciles the inter receivables and payables.
- Notifies applicable directors monthly of underspent/overspent closing programs.
- Processes monthly invoices for recognizing A/R and income for grants and contracts.
- Processes and distributes all monthly financial reports and maintain original files.
- Runs general ledger reports and maintains monthly files.
Fixed Assets:
- Create and monitor a system of controls, procedures, and forms for the recording of fixed assets.
- Record fixed assets acquisitions and dispositions in the accounting system.
- Make sure all fixed assets additions and dispositions are reported to the insurance company for coverage.
- Conduct periodic physical counts of fixed assets.
- Calculate depreciation for all fixed assets.
- Review and update the detailed schedule of fixed assets and accumulated depreciation.
- Prepare audit schedules relating to fixed assets and assist the auditors in their inquiries.
Budget:
- Processes and maintains approved budget and related revisions in the accounting system.
- Maintains files of budgetary information. Research budget exception errors and resolves such as appropriate.
- Ensures that directors correctly carryover their budgets utilizing December income statements and grant documentation.
- Sets up new accounts as requested.
- Maintains the highest level of integrity and confidentiality with Tribe’s records and information.
- Keeps up to date and assesses accounting trends by maintaining affiliations with successful organizations, attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications and/or participating in professional associations.
Miscellaneous:
- Cross train with other accounting positions in the department.
- Submit property & general liability claims to the insurance broker in a timely manner.
- Follow up on insurance claims from beginning to end.
- Prepare and update procedural manual, detail checklist of duties and responsibilities for this position.
- Maintain contacts of a positive nature with co-workers in the accounting department, all tribal staff, community members, funding agency representatives, and others to accomplish the Tribe's financial objectives and preserve good public relations.
- Assists in compiling, organizing, or preparing pertinent information for audits as required.
- Attends and participates in various staff meetings.
- Other duties as assigned by the Finance Director.
Education and Certification:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Business Administration, or related field required.
- Driver’s License – required.
Computer Skills:
- Possesses intermediate computer skills with the ability to operate Microsoft Dynamics GP or any accounting software.
- Strong Excel skills along with good accounting, math, and office computer skills.
- Ability to use standard office equipment, including a personal computer, printers, calculator, photocopier, fax, etc.
Personal Skills:
- Excellent communication skills, able to communicate effectively with all levels of organization.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Sound knowledge of accounting principles, standards, and regulations.
- Detail oriented with a passion for accuracy.

- Ability to learn and follow the Tribe's accounting department policies and procedures, and all other applicable employee policies and procedures.
- Must comply with the Tribe Drug Free Workplace Policy.
Experience:
- Have at least 5 years of experience in General Ledger, budgets, or related accounting experience.
- Have one year of experience in professional accounting or financial/budgetary analysis work.
- Experience in governmental accounting preferred.
- Possess a clear understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
Physical Requirements:
- Position involves sitting long periods, standing manual dexterity, stooping, and bending.
- Occasionally required to lift and move up to 25 pounds.
- Vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.
Travel Requirements:
- Local, Statewide and out of state travel may be required.
