Salary Range: $100,000.00 - $115,000.00 Salary/year
Travel Percentage: Occasional travel to trainings
Description
The Civil Legal Attorney provides legal advice to the tribe’s membership and works with the tribe’s Court Administrator and Administrator of Judicial Services. This is a 3 year grant funded position with the potential of becoming a permanent position.
Duties Include:
- Meet with tribal members and community members to help them navigate and respond to civil matters, including: probate, family law, responding to the Social Security Administration, fishing and traffic citations, etc.
- Meet with the Tribe’s legal team, court staff, children and family services, and others to learn about tribal member needs and understand the tribe’s systems and processes to improve tribal member preparedness.
- Host community legal clinics to help tribal members with estate planning, Medical Powers of Attorney, Powers of Attorney, etc., including designing content, forms, and meeting individually on a one-on-one basis as needed.
- Develop forms and self-help processes in coordination with relevant staff.
- Identify conflicts, refer cases to conflict counsel and track conflicts.
- Track cases and data and prepare reports supervisor and leaders.
- Attend trainings as necessary.
- Help implement system improvements for implementation of the Civil Legal Aid Policy.
- Represent the Tribe with external entities at speaking engagements and presentations when requested.
- Ability to work remotely and on-site as agreed upon.
- This position does NOT directly represent members in Court.
Education and Certifications
- Juris Doctor required.
- Admission to the Washington State Bar required.
- Good Standing with the State Bar.
- Admission to the Port Gamble S’Klallam Community Court Bar required.
- Driver’s license required.
Experience
- Knowledge of federal Indian law desirable.
- Knowledge of and experience with tribal law and tribal communities highly desirable.
Physical Requirements:
- Regularly required to finger, handle, reach with hands and arms
- Frequently required to walk, sit, stand
- Normal audio and visual acuity
- This position is eligible for situational remote work as needed. The schedule must be discussed with and approved by supervisor and director and may be subject to change depending on role and department need.
Travel Requirements:
- Local, statewide and out of state travel may be required.
