Summer Internships

This internship is designed to be both educational and practical. In this position, the intern will learn how to take skills he/she may have acquired in school related to his or her particular areas of interest and apply them in a professional setting. He/she will gain a better understanding of their roles in a global business setting and be better prepared to work in the future. Position Summary

Responsible for learning and directly assisting the Sam Houston Team with a wide range of projects related to vessel operations and have the opportunity to gain hands on experience.

Responsibilities/Duties

• Perform daily maintenance and upkeep on vessel appearance and usability
• Provide a customer service experience (be an ambassador) to our visitors and guests aboard vessel
• Assist passengers while boarding vessel; provide passengers necessary comforts while aboard
• Handle vessel lines to moor and unmoor the M/V Sam Houston
• Act in accordance with Port Houston core values (respect, excellence, accountability, diligence, and you).
• Perform other duties as assigned
  
  

Eligibility Requirements

• Students must be currently enrolled in and have already completed two semesters in an undergraduate or graduate degree program
• 2026/2027 graduation status preferred (junior/senior level)
• May 2025 graduates are not eligible
• Students must either attend a Houston area college/university or have a permanent residence within a commutable distance
• Students must be in good academic standing to apply for an internship; a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.7 is preferred
• Students may not be related to any current Port of Houston Authority employee
• Students must be able to work throughout the established ten to twelve-week (10-12) program dates

Physical Demands: Sedentary Work – Exerts up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, a negligible amount of force frequently, and/or or constantly having to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally, and all other sedentary criteria are met.
