The Port of San Diego is seeking a skilled Maintenance Mechanic with Journeyman Level experience, pertaining to the maintenance, repair and installation of various complex machinery and facilities components. The ideal candidate will possess a strong mechanical background, proficient welding and fabrication abilities, provide excellent customer service skills, adhere to all safety standards and have basic computer skills. Responsibilities include knowledge, skills and abilities to troubleshoot, repair, install and perform preventative maintenance on hydraulic and mechanical equipment, in both a shop and field environment. GENERAL PURPOSE
Under general supervision, performs skilled, journey-level field and shop duties in the design, fabrication, installation, maintenance and repair of metal structures, tools, machinery and mechanical equipment; performs skilled, journey-level combination welding duties; and performs related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the full journey-level class in the Maintenance Mechanic series. Incumbents perform a variety of skilled and difficult metal fabrication and repair work requiring journey-level welding, fabrication and machine shop skills. Assignments vary, encompass a variety of tasks, seldom have detailed instructions, and require sound, independent judgment and initiative. Incumbents may be assigned employees from lower-level classes as helpers/assistants and provide on-job-job training to those employees.
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required of personnel so classified.
1. Designs, fabricates, alters or repairs metal parts and surfaces including doors, shelves, carts, railings, locks, fencing, hinges, cages, vents, cranes, docks, stairs, piers, HVAC equipment and others; installs, dismantles, repairs, maintains and overhauls pumps, blowers and other plant equipment.
2. Assists in securing District facilities and equipment; welds security bars, screens, grates, light covers, toolboxes and cabinets.
3. Fabricates, welds and mounts a variety of locking devices for doors, gates and boxes; welds security railing pipes.
4. Performs semi-skilled tasks in the areas of pipefitting, plumbing, electrical, carpentry and HVAC systems.
5. Performs a variety of welding for vehicle repair including hitches, racks, seats, tailgates and automotive shop lifts; welds parts on a variety of vehicles and equipment
including tractors, mowers, trucks, forklifts, trailers and grounds maintenance equipment.
6. Performs safety checks and repairs unsafe conditions; follows safe work practices and ensures safety procedures are observed.
7. Welds and cuts parts using MIG, TIG, stick, plasma-arc, and oxy-acetylene equipment. Performs welding, brazing and soldering on a variety of metals including steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, brass, and cast iron.
8. Operates a variety of tools and shop equipment including welders, grinders, drill presses, lathes, milling machines, saws and a variety of hand and power tools used
in the welding, metal fabrication and machine shop trades; uses hoists, dollies, rollers and trucks to rig and move machinery.
9. Reads and interprets diagrams and blueprints for fabrication assignments.
10. Assists other skilled maintenance personnel in completing cooperative assignments requiring specialized welding and metal fabrication skills and equipment.
OTHER DUTIES
1. Operates vehicles to travel to various District locations.
2. May lead and train lower-level maintenance personnel.

1. Methods, practices, tools and equipment used in the oxy-acetylene, MIG, TIG and stick welding trades.
2. Methods, practices, tools and equipment used in the machine shop and steel fabrication trades.
3. Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work.
4. Practices and procedures of shop and field welding.
5. Welding properties of the various metals and alloys.
6. Federal, state and local codes, regulations and laws pertaining to the work.
7. Computer applications applicable to assigned work responsibilities.
Ability to:
1. Operate and maintain a wide variety of hand, power and shop tools and equipment used in the work.
2. Use mills, drills, lathes, and welding machines.
3. Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
4. Estimate necessary materials and equipment to complete assignments.
5. Exercise independent judgment and initiative without close supervision.
6. Prepare basic records and reports.
7. Read and interpret manuals, specifications and drawings.
8. Use shop mathematics to make calculations.
9. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work.
10. Fabricate and repair a wide variety of metal parts, equipment and tools.
11. Coordinate work assignments with other sections, departments, divisions or agencies
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education, Training and Experience:
Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent; and three years of skilled machine shop, metal fabrication and welding experience. Time served as a District Intern counts towards the years of experience.
Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:
A current, valid California Class C driver's license at time of appointment and maintained at all times thereafter in order to operate a vehicle on District business.
An AWS D1.1-96 or other District approved welding certification must be obtained by the completion of the probationary period and maintained at all times thereafter.
A valid first aid and CPR certification may be required and, if required, must be maintained throughout District employment.
The District reserves the right to change or add to any of the stated licensing requirements at any time, as required by law, regulation or business necessity.
Employees may be required to: serve on an on-call or stand-by basis; work on assigned shifts, on weekends and work overtime.
If assigned to perform work at any of the District's maritime facilities, you must be able to pass a background check in accordance with current Federal and State
requirements.
