Position Summary
Responsible for maintaining and managing Port San Antonio campus copper and fiber structured cable systems. This role involves monitoring capacity and usage, conducting audits, coordinating maintenance, and ensuring adherence to standards. The specialist will also handle fiber circuit services, including service order creation, circuit ID assignment, and project delivery. Installs and maintains communication distribution systems and/or other signals. These systems comprise the physical architecture that supports voice, video, and data transmission within industrial, commercial and institutional complexes. This includes the physical installation of cabling, surveying work sites to determine the best installation practices and path, support other projects as needed.
Working Conditions
Indoor and outdoor work, walking, standing, sitting, hearing, bending, crouching, kneeling, climbing, crawling in confined areas. Employee may be subject to moderate noise, extreme temperatures, hazardous conditions, precarious places and risk of electrical shock. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally with or without accommodation, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Manual dexterity, ability to lift up to 30 pounds. Ability to travel to different work sites. Use of cable termination and other tools needed for testing, installation, repair and or removal. Use of personal computing equipment, telephone, multi-functioning printer and calculator.
Essential Functions
- Interpret and verify service orders, specifications, drawings, schematics, special requirements and instructions
- Maintain campus cooper and fiber structured cable systems and manholes
- Monitor, diagnose and repair copper and optical fiber systems
- Remove and demolishes abandoned cables
- Run, pull, terminate and splice the following but not limited to copper and fiber optic cables (CAT5, CAT6, coax, low voltage cables, 25 pair, 50 pair and fiber).
- Mount telecommunication equipment, routers, switches etc. all while following industry standards, best practices and manufacturer requirements
- Assist in setting up hubs, routers and switches using information provided by IT Department
- Install or maintain existing fire stopping in conduits, trays, wall/ceiling/floor penetrations
- Update cable records, network cabling by labeling cables and recording as built diagrams and specifications. This includes Fluke testing of installations
- Maintain customer rapport by listening and resolving concerns, provide updates, answer questions or escalate to senior employees for resolution if required
- Provides accurate time/work logs and notes
- Performs site surveys, read and use blueprints and floor plan and conduct visual site inspections
- Must adhere to OSHA Safety standards
- Must possess the ability to operate independently and collaboratively with minimal supervision
- Performs other duties as assigned
EDUCATION
High school diploma or equivalent
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in network services, communications infrastructure management, fiber and cabling, or a related field.
- Knowledge and hands-on experience with fiber optic technology, including installation, repair, and maintenance of fiber and cabling systems using OTDR.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION
- BICSI Technician certification or equivalent preferred.
- A Certification or related experience
- Class C Driver License
TESTING
Must pass criminal background check
Must pass drug test
OTHER
- Basic knowledge of LAN/WAN topologies, cabling standards, and components.
- Ability to work extended hours (overtime/weekends) as needed.
- Ability to be scheduled for work “on-call” as needed
