Portage Community School District is hiring two health room assistants to work the school year plus additional summer school hours that may serve students early childhood through 12th grade population. This position and will start as soon as possible.
Summary: The Health Room Assistant Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse will be responsible for knowledge of and implementation of district policies and protocols for the provision of school nursing and health services to students as assigned. The nurse will practice under the direction of the Student Services Director and in consultation of the District Nurse. Knowledge, skills, and abilities to administer medications via routes consisting of oral pill or liquid, sublingual, inhalation, subcutaneous or intramuscular auto injector, buccal, intranasal, subcutaneous or intramuscular injection by needle and syringe, and rectal. Utilization of health room supplies for management of common childhood injuries. Provision of assistance to other school nursing and health services personnel. Documentation of all actions nursing services provided. Maintain confidentiality of all health-related information following FERPA guidance including the reporting of suspect child abuse and neglect.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
Direct Care
Assess student needs and provide care or access care on the student’s behalf from other sources using the nursing process.
Provide emergency health services and access EMS as needed.
Follow individual health plans for students.
Facilitate completion of medication forms in accordance with State statutes.
Communicate with teachers, parents, and administration about relevant situations.
Maintain confidentiality of student and staff health information.
Intervene and control communicable and nuisance diseases, including head lice assistance. Collaborate with the local and state health departments regarding reportable communicable diseases.
Other duties as requested by the administration.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to pass a basic employee physical prior to employment.
Ability to lift and carry a maximum of 25 pounds.
Ability to perform the following tasks over a sustained period: lifting, walking, stooping, bending, twisting, turning, pushing, sitting, and standing.
Ability to read, understand, and follow printed directions and labels for the safety of staff and students and operation of equipment.
Ability to understand written and verbal communications.
Attention to detail and conscientiousness.
Ability to pass a criminal background check.
Ability to operate a computer, calculator, copy machine, telephone, and other office equipment with dexterity and in a safe and efficient manner.
Professional presentation and attitude.
Tests may be administered to determine the extent to which an employee meets the job description.
Punctuality.
The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or illegal substances in the workplace in compliance with Policy 3122.01 throughout their employment in the district.
Minimally Qualified Applicants:
Holds a current unrestricted nurse license to practice in the State of Wisconsin by Chapter 441.
Current Healthcare Provider/Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR with AED certification.
Experience working with children who have a variety of chronic and acute health conditions, such as, but not limited to type 1 diabetes, asthma, anaphylactic allergies, anxiety, seizure disorders, etc. for one year or more.
Familiarity with immunizations for the school-aged child.
Ability to work independently and utilize resources by phone.
Have a reliable vehicle and valid Wisconsin driver’s license to get from school to school.
Follow the nursing process with integrity.
Well-Qualified Applicants:
Baccalaureate degree in Nursing.
Experience as a school nurse or school health assistant.
Clinical experience working in the pediatric specialty clinic arena within the past 5 years.
Clinical experience working with diabetes related technologies such as CGMs, insulin pumps/systems, and Smart insulin pens.
