The Human Resources Generalist will oversee the daily functions of the Human Resource (HR) department including but not limited to employee relations, benefits, leave, disciplinary matters, disputes and investigations, performance and talent management, recognition and morale, occupational health and safety and upholding company policies and practices.

Compliance & Documentation

  • Maintains compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews policies and practices to maintain compliance.
  • Overseeing the upkeep of ACA tracking, EEO tracking, and other necessary reports.
  • Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law.
  • Interpret and explain human resources policies, procedures, laws, standards, or regulations.
  • Review, track, and document compliance with mandatory and non-mandatory training, continuing education, and work assessments.
  • Partner with management to develop or implement personnel policies or procedures.
  • Prepare or maintain employment records related to events, such as hiring, termination, leaves, or promotion.

Employee Relations

  • Handles employment-related inquiries from employees and supervisors, referring to the appropriate staff where applicable.
  • Attends and participates in employee disciplinary meetings, terminations, and investigations.
  • Conduct exit interviews and ensure that necessary employment termination paperwork is completed.

Benefits, Paid Time Off & Attendance

  • Oversee employee benefit plans, enrollment and benefit communications.
  • Oversee the accurate and timely completion of time cards for applicable employees.
  • Oversee the administration of paid time off tracking and requests.

Other Projects & Duties

  • Assist with the development and where applicable implementation of training, communications, and presentations for new and existing employees.
  • Maintain and update human resource documents, such as employee handbooks, directories, or performance evaluation forms.
  • Assist with the coordination and scheduling of onboarding activities and meetings for all new employees as needed.
  • Complete all other duties as assigned.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Proficiency with or the ability to quickly learn the organization's HRIS and talent management system.
  • Service oriented with a focus on helping others.

Qualifications (Education Requirements/Experience):

  • Bachelors in Human Resources, Business, or related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in the Human Resources field.
  • Demonstrated agreement with the stated mission, philosophy, values, and goals of Portage Learning.

Work Environment:

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, projectors, filing cabinets and fax machines.

  • Regularly required to sit; talk and hear, use hands to type, file, handle or feel. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. Occasionally required to stand; walk and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Visual acuity to use a keyboard, prepare and analyze data and figures; transcribing, viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
  • May require ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; or the ability to stand, walk, lift, carry and move light to medium weight. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and learn technical information.
  • Light lifting is required. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force to constantly move objects.

Position Types and Expected Hours to work:

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are typically 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Must be able to work from the office located in Chippewa Township, PA and conduct a minimum of 80% of work hours in the office.

Travel:

This job may require occasional travel. Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be expected.
