What are the responsibilities and job description for the SPED Teacher (2 Positions) High School position at Portales Municipal Schools?
Portales Schools has two SPED Teacher vacancies for the 2025/2026 school year at Portales High School.
The special education teacher will provide guidance and instructional experiences that are academically and developmentally appropriate for each student with a disability or giftedness assigned to that classroom.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement IEPs for students with disabilities.
- Adapt curriculum and teaching methods to meet the diverse needs of students.
- Monitor student progress and adjust teaching strategies as needed.
- Collaborate with general education teachers, parents, and other support staff.
- Provide a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment.
- Participate in ongoing professional development and training.
- Be able to appropriately and effectively evaluate students.
- Complete other duties as assigned by the Principal/Assistant Principal, Director of Special Education, or Superintendent.
- Complete all required paperwork, including but not limited to: IEPs, goals/objectives, progress reports, caseload reports, requisitions, and documentation by due dates.
Requirements:
- Valid state certification/licensure in Special Education.
- Adhere to confidentiality laws and regulations.
- Demonstrate ethical behavior.
- Bachelor’s degree in Special Education (Master’s preferred).
- Be knowledgeable about New Mexico State Standards and Benchmarks.
- Experience working with students with diverse needs (preferably in an educational setting).
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Compassionate, patient, and dedicated to student success.
Qualifications:
1. Bachelor’s Degree
2. K-12 Special Education license issued by the New Mexico Public Education Department.
3. Endorsement in Math, ELA, Social Studies, or Science.
Salary is based on the licensure level and experience. SPED teachers receive an additional $3000 increment.

Portales Municipal Schools are located in the City of Portales, which has a population of about 12,000. The area's economy is based primarily on agriculture. Portales is the home of Eastern New Mexico University and is less than 20 miles from Cannon Air Force Base near Clovis, NM.
The Portales Municipal School District consists of six grade-level schools. This means each school, except the high school, consists of two grade levels and is not community-based. Portales High School houses grades 9-12, while Brown Early Childhood Center is grades PK-K; James Elementary is 1st and 2nd grade; Valencia Elementary consists of grades 3rd and 4th; Lindsey/Steiner Elementary is grades 5th and 6th; and Portales Junior High is the home of 7th and 8th-grade students.
