Upper School History Teacher (2025-2026 School Year)

Porter-Gaud School is an Episcopal, independent, coeducational day school of 1,650 students in preschool through grade 12. The School is seeking a full-time Upper School History Teacher who will be responsible for instructing Upper School students in World History with potential coverage for US Government, in accordance with the content and objectives of the curriculum prescribed by the Upper School division. Our Upper School division is comprised of grades 9 through 12. Experience with teaching honors courses, such as Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate, is preferred.

The Upper School History Teacher will display a continuous commitment to developing the attitudes, knowledge, and skills (intercultural competence) to engage in appropriate and effective communication with students, colleagues, and families from diverse backgrounds and perspectives. We desire candidates who will contribute to the school's efforts to continue creating a more inclusive and equitable community where all individuals can develop a sense of belonging.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct students in history in accordance with curriculum requirements and department objectives.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and assessments that address multiple learning styles.
  • Develop organized lesson plans that:
    • emphasize empathy for and understanding of historic cultures and societies, as well as individuals of every socio-political stratum;
    • challenge students to think and write critically through the evaluation of evidence, both subjective and objective, in order to formulate clear positions that require analysis, synthesis, contextualization, and historical literacy;
    • place an emphasis on thematic history and the interrelationship of events over memorization of facts, challenging students to focus more on the how and why, rather than the names and dates;
    • empower students to personalize history while appreciating the achievements and sacrifices of those who came before them.
  • Evidence enthusiasm for and continued development of content knowledge in subject matter.
  • Establish and actively maintain a class environment where excellence in learning is honored and where respectful interactions between and among students are valued.
  • Participate as an active team member within the History Department, the Upper School faculty, and the School community, demonstrating a commitment to the well-being of all Porter-Gaud students and to the best interests of the School as a whole.
The Successful Candidate Will Have

  • A Bachelor’s degree or advanced degree in history, or comparable discipline, from an accredited college or university (an advanced degree in field is an advantage).
  • Preferably three or more years of teaching secondary or post-secondary history, with experience teaching World History.
  • Fluency in the use of technology in the classroom.
  • Willingness to support diversity and inclusion efforts at the school.

Reporting: The Upper School History teacher will report directly to the Head of the Upper School and will take direction from the History Department Chair.

Salary: Commensurate with experience.
