Job Description

The Portland Art Museum (referred to as Museum) and PAM CUT // Center for an Untold Tomorrow invites applications for the position of Custodial Lead. The Custodial Lead is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the custodial team to ensure a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for staff, visitors, and guests. This position provides guidance and training to custodial staff, coordinates schedules, monitors work performance, and ensures adherence to established cleaning standards and safety protocols.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the daily activities of custodial staff, ensuring efficient workflow and task completion
  • Develop and maintain cleaning schedules to meet organizational needs, including event-specific requirements
  • Inspect work areas regularly to ensure cleanliness and compliance with safety and quality standards
  • Provide hands-on assistance with custodial tasks, including but not limited to floor care, waste removal, restroom maintenance, and other general cleaning duties
  • Conduct training sessions for new hires and ongoing professional development for staff, emphasizing safety and effective cleaning techniques
  • Monitor inventory levels of cleaning supplies and equipment; coordinate reorders to ensure uninterrupted operations
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA standards and other regulatory guidelines
  • Act as a point of contact for emergencies, coordinating with relevant departments to address immediate needs

Secondary or Additional Responsibilities

  • Helps maintain MaintenX online portal to track custodial tasks
  • Serves on PAM committees as assigned
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate custodial staff to ensure a safe and clean environment

  • Strong leadership and organizational skills with the ability to manage a diverse team
  • Proficiency in the use of cleaning tools, equipment, and chemicals
  • Familiarity with OSHA standards and workplace safety protocols
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Excellent prioritization skills, meeting deadlines, and maintaining a high level of detail

Education, Formal & Informal Experience, Training Required, Certification, Etc.

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in custodial work

Job Conditions

  • Non-Exempt
  • Schedule/Hours: 8:30am -5pm, Days of the week are flexible, but availability for at least one weekend shift per week is required (40 hours per week)
  • Onsite/Not Remote
  • Occasional overtime and evening hours
  • On-call status
  • Extensive computer work
  • Work with chemicals

Physical Activities

  • Frequently climb stairs
  • Occasionally work in high noise areas (hearing protection required)
  • Occasional outdoor work, in varying temperature and humidity environments
  • Frequently standing, walking, bending, kneeling, grasping and use of fingers
  • Frequent repetitive motions of hands/wrist
  • Frequent verbal communication with other staff members
  • Occasionally push/pull/lift/carry up to 50lbs

  • Budgeted compensation is within pay grade E ($20.08 min - $23.10 mid - $26.11 max), depending on experience
