The Addictions Counseling Program (AD) Program at Portland Community College (PCC) is seeking a full-time instructor for Addictions Counseling.

The AD program is a part of the Public Services, Education & Social Sciences Academic pathway. The Addictions Counseling program at Portland Community College is the largest addiction counselor education program in OR state. The program provides specialization for further career advancement as well as the educational foundation for students starting their journey in the addictions profession as a certified alcohol and drug counselor.

The program offers courses through flexible delivery modalities: fully online (asynchronous), online (synchronous/remote - live instruction via zoom), on-site/hybrid, and fully on-site at multiple PCC locations. We strive to provide high quality culturally competent instruction and services with a commitment to student success.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in counseling, psychology, human service, human development, sociology, social work or related discipline, and be a current Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (or equivalent), or a current Certified Prevention Specialist (or equivalent) and have a minimum of five years of experience working with chemically or behaviorally addicted or at risk populations, OR
  • A Masters degree in counseling, psychology, human service, human development, sociology, social work or related discipline and have a minimum of five years working with chemically or behaviorally addicted or at risk populations, OR
  • A Doctoral degree in counseling, psychology, human service, human development, sociology, social work or related discipline or a clinical doctorate degree (MD or DO only) and at least one year of working with the chemically or behaviorally addicted or at risk populations or as a researcher in the arena of behavior and/or neuroscience.

Success criteria

  • Be certified under MHACBO (Mental Health and Addiction Certification Board of Oregon), or similar State or National Certification (i.e. NAADAC).
  • Ability to teach and support equitable student success across a variety of teaching modalities. Experience working with diverse populations demonstrating a commitment to culturally responsive teaching, and a willingness to innovate, and take risks in the classroom.
  • Experience and/or willingness to help maintain the breadth of curricular offerings by teaching a variety of course offerings. Please reference our current course offerings by accessing the catalog (AD Courses). Experience supporting practicum courses, and mentoring in courses related to counseling coursework is a benefit.
  • Willingness to stay current with contemporary best practices and evidence-based methodologies, while demonstrating a commitment to ongoing professional development. Faculty must showcase a strong understanding of both theory and practice, as well as up-to-date knowledge and continuous study in their field
  • Demonstrated ability to foster and maintain collaborative, positive relationships with industry partners
  • Knowledge and understanding of current DSM (Diagnostic Statistical Manual), ASAM (American Society of Addiction Medicine) and SAMHSA's Treatment Improvement Protocols (TIPs) and Technical Assistance Publications (TAPs)
  • Proven ability to stay up-to-date with evolving technologies and shifting community support needs. Familiar with various learning management systems (e.g., Brightspace, Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle) or capable of efficiently navigating technology-based platforms
  • Demonstrates ability and enthusiasm to work collaboratively and build community with department faculty and staff, as well as across the college. Skills in attention to detail, organization and planning. Responsibilities may include coordinating course materials, assessing student learning, and providing onboarding and continued mentorship of faculty.

Starting Salary Expectations Initial Salary Placement will be between Step 1 ($73,911) and Step 3 (78,408) based on related experience, per PCC's collective bargaining agreement. Position Grade Salary Range $73,911.00 to $118,558.00, Annual Salary

PCC offers a comprehensive benefit package designed to provide employees and their families, including domestic partners, with access to a broad range of benefit options. Includes Health, Dental, and Vision options, Group Life, Long-term Disability, Long-term Care, and Auto and Home Insurance programs.

PCC currently funds the Oregon Public Employees Retirement System (PERS/OPSRP) pension and contributes an additional 6% into the employee's Individual Account Program under PERS/OPSRP. A portion of the 6% will be diverted to The Employee Pension Stability Account as mandated by Senate Bill 1049. PCC offers a tax deferred annuity program and a deferred compensation program where employees may save additional pre-tax dollars for retirement.

Additionally, PCC provides a tuition waiver for courses offered at PCC for yourself, domestic partner, and dependent children under 24 years of age; plus partial tuition reimbursement for yourself at other accredited institutions.

  • Please note: Temporary Full-Time Faculty are not eligible for Personal Leave Days, Life Insurance, Long-term Disability, or AD&D Insurance.

Paid Leave

1 day of sick leave for every 18 days worked (~10 per year)

21 hours of additional personal leave per year

4 paid holidays (which occur during the term you are teaching)

Instructors shall have earned required academic credentials at a regionally accredited US institution or a foreign institution having the equivalent of regional accreditation.

Instructors with credentials from other countries will have their transcripts evaluated by agencies that have good standing with the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services to establish fulfillment of this standard.
