The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) program at Portland Community College is seeking a full-time instructor effective September 1, 2025 beginning the 2025/2026 academic year.

Portland Community College’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) program is the largest in the state of Oregon. This Career Technical Education program offers the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) career pathway certificate, a one-year EMS certificate and the accredited Paramedic AAS degree. EMS Program


PCC is committed to training and educating EMS Providers to the highest standards and has kept pace as technological advances and demands have evolved, including the addition of a new Cascade Campus Medical Simulation Center (SIM Center).


This faculty position requires experience in the Emergency Medical Services industry and the ability to teach a broad range of Emergency Medical Services courses, as well as develop future coursework in alignment with industry. Based out of PCC’s Cascade Campus as one of three full-time Emergency Medical Services (EMS) faculty, this instructor performs all duties of full-time faculty at PCC and in particular:

  • provides academic leadership in the implementation of a robust Emergency Medical Services education program;

  • supports and mentors other EMS faculty & staff;
  • supports the development of an innovative, culturally-responsive Emergency Medical Services curriculum that meets or exceeds the National Emergency Medical Services Education Standards.

NOTE: Prior work with diverse audiences and teaching at the community college, college and/or adult education level preferred.

This position serves the EMS programs across multiple locations in PCC’s service area (Cascade, Willow Creek, Forest Grove, etc.). The primary location will be Cascade Campus, with an expectation that the faculty member teaches at any location where EMS courses are offered. In addition, there will be some occasions where business will be required at other PCC or off-site locations. There will be some opportunities for remote/hybrid work, as approved by the position supervisor and executive leaders.

  • Ability to ensure program adherence to the Oregon Health Authority (OHA), National Registry, Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) Standards

  • Experience managing multiple projects, and familiarity with maintaining program equipment and technology
  • Training and/or development of lab techs/skilled professionals
  • Knowledgeable about the current versions of the National EMS Scope of Practice, the National EMS Education Standards, and evidenced-informed clinical practice
  • Experience working with multiple industry partners and both internal and external stakeholders to creatively and collaboratively seek continuous improvement in reaching program outcomes and student success
  • Experience teaching, mentoring, or supervising in Emergency Medical Services education in-person, online, and using simulations
  • Proven instructional experience demonstrating an ability to create and nurture a sense of community, well-being, and belonging through culturally responsive teaching practices
  • Successfully applying a solution-focused approach to the program through evaluation of current and future issues/trends.
  • Demonstrated communication skills with a wide range of people with varied experiences, perspectives, and unique goals, especially from communities who have been historically underrepresented

  • Collaborative leadership experience to drive cooperative change, coordinate, foster and support a culture of innovation and accountability

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered, your application must demonstrate these minimum qualifications. (Experience is calculated based on the start and end dates you provide multiplied by the number of hours per week worked).

Instructors must be qualified to teach the majority of the courses in the discipline of Emergency Medical Services (both certificate and degree). Faculty in the EMS department are also responsible for ensuring professional accreditation, curricular revisions and developments, equipment/facility maintenance, as well as representing PCC’s EMS program in collaboration with industry & professional organizations.


  • Currently licensed Oregon Paramedic or EMS Medical Director in good standing with OHA EMS & TS
  • Minimum 5 years experience working at the paramedic level in emergency medicine/pre-hospital care
  • AHA BLS Instructor or equivalent
  • AHA ACLS Instructor or equivalent BTLS or PHTLS Instructor
  • At least one of the following: NFPA Instructor 1, NAEMSE Instructor, 40 hours of the Instructor Development Program offered by the Oregon DPSST, transcripted 3 credits of adult learning theory, or equivalent
  • Participation in Course Director Updates offered by OHA
  • Transcripted evidence of math competency equivalent to college algebra, or higher
  • Minimum 3 years experience teaching, training or supervising and mentoring
  • Associates Degree or higher from an accredited institution of higher learning in Emergency Medical Services, Fire Protection/Administration, Nursing, Allied Health or closely related field

Starting Salary Expectations

Initial Salary Placement will be from Step 1 ($73,911.00) to Step 3 ($78,408.00) based on related experience, per PCC's collective bargaining agreement.

PCC currently funds the Oregon Public Employees Retirement System (PERS/OPSRP) pension and contributes an additional 6% into the employee's Individual Account Program under PERS/OPSRP. A portion of the 6% will be diverted to The Employee Pension Stability Account as mandated by Senate Bill 1049. PCC offers a tax deferred annuity program and a deferred compensation program where employees may save additional pre-tax dollars for retirement.

Additionally, PCC provides a tuition waiver for courses offered at PCC for yourself, domestic partner, and dependent children under 24 years of age; plus partial tuition reimbursement for yourself at other accredited institutions.

Paid Leave:

  • 1 day of sick leave for every 18 days worked (~10 per year)

  • 21 hours of additional personal leave per year

  • 4 paid holidays (which occur during the term you are teaching)

Instructors shall have earned required academic credentials at a regionally accredited US institution or a foreign institution having the equivalent of regional accreditation.

Instructors with credentials from other countries will have their transcripts evaluated by agencies that have good standing with the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services to establish fulfillment of this standard.
