Who We Are

The Portland Lesbian Choir is nearing its 40th Year as a performing arts organization. Our choir now numbers over 150 singers, and we recently expanded our 11-member Board of Directors to include six non-singing members from the community. We are excited to be hiring this first Executive Director position as part of our strategic growth efforts.

We reach out to the greater community of Portland, Oregon by offering special performances to some who have not heard a chorus like ours, by providing panels and tables sharing information about our choir, and by acting individually and together in service.

Role Description

The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for the overall strategic, operational, administrative and developmental functions of the Portland Lesbian Choir (PLC). The ED holds this responsibility in collaboration with the Board of Directors. The ED carries out necessary management policies and general business operations of the Organization, performs special assignments, and is empowered to exercise discretion and independent judgment in performing essential business for PLC.The ED will also work with Choir Leadership to increase revenue and develop annual organizational budgets to review with the Board.

The ED will develop and help foster harmonious working relationships within the organization (staff and members) and represent the organization to the wider community, clients, donors, patrons, sponsors, and business associates.The ED will also maintain productive working relationships with GALA and other community choruses and will act at times as a spokespersonfor the choir.

Time commitment : 1.0 FTE salaried position. 40 hours per week. Flexible hours, must be able to work some evenings, and weekends, especially when nearing a concert.

Reporting Structure : The ED is appointed by the Board of Directors and shall report directly to the board and the Board President. Each year, the ED shall receive an annual evaluation at the direction of the board, which will be overseen by the Board President.

The ED is responsible for keeping the Board informed of pertinent business and management issues. The ED is a non-voting (ex officio) member of the Board of Directors.

Required Qualifications

A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree or a minimum of five years of proven experience in administration, revenue development, and personnel management, preferably in the arts industry, including but not limited to : profit and loss responsibilities, salary administration, employee management, budget preparation, budget administration, fundraising and development; and

An interest and passion working with the arts and LGBTQ community.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent verbal and written skills, especially as those skills relate to writing grant proposals, and marketing materials;
  • The ability to present a professional and positive image to a wide variety of individuals and organizations;
  • Experience cultivating and managing individual donors and corporate sponsors and proven experience in generating diversified revenue sources;
  • Experience in all elements of donor event planning and management;
  • Database expertise and experience writing reports;
  • Experience with marketing, marketing strategies, media relations, branding standards, and managing advertising contracts;
  • Strong organizational and communication skills with ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and tasks;
  • Experience working with a volunteer board of directors and managing paid and volunteer staff;
  • Experience with contract negotiation and administration;
  • Highly dependable, takes initiative, has good judgment and is able to function with minimal supervision while producing quality work;
  • Experience managing a team and navigating conflict within in an empathetic and ethical framework; and

    Understanding and grounding within the music and / or arts community and their patrons.

    Wage : $55,000-65,000 yr DOE
