Position Details

BASIC FUNCTION

The Student Attendance Coach promotes and enhances the overall academic mission of the district by providing services that strengthen home/school/community partnerships and alleviate barriers to learning for students that have been represented in school discipline issues and/or who struggle with their connectedness to school. The Student Engagement Coach advances the understanding of the emotional and social development of students and the influences of family, community, and cultural differences on student success and by implementing culturally responsive student support and intervention strategies. Working with parents/guardians, teachers, school leadership, district supports, and community partners, the student engagement coach implements strategies that promote students’ positive school engagement.


REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

The classification specification does not describe all duties performed by all incumbents within the class. This summary provides examples of typical tasks performed in this classification.

  • Work with school and district leadership and staff to support students in order to: 1) increase student engagement and decrease discipline incidents 2) increase student attendance in school, and 3) increase student engagement by participating in extra curricular activities, with a focus on historically underserved, emerging bilingual, and special education students. Demonstrate a commitment to the Portland Public Schools Equity Initiative by developing a thorough knowledge and application of the district Racial Educational Equity Policy, the Social Justice and Racial Equity Lens and other board policies; participate in staff development, in- services and trainings related to diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace and in K – 12 education; model appropriate behaviors; develop, recommend and implement improvements to educational practices with awareness and understanding of their impact in a racially and culturally diverse community.
  • Collaborate with instructional specialists and other school staff to implement a Multi-tiered System of Supports (MTSS) in order to address root causes of student engagement, and to assist and advocate for students with social emotional and/or academic needs.
  • Serve on school-based committees to address educational issues, school engagement problems, safety issues, and program development for students.
  • Collaborate with community partners offering on-site and community based services, including mentoring and tutoring supports, to ensure aligned supports for students using the MTSS framework.
  • Collaborate multi-agency services to support students and remove barriers to school engagement and refer students to appropriate social service supports provided by community, city, state and county organizations.
  • Provide ongoing consultation with mental health professionals including school psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors, and other licensed mental health providers.
  • Participate and lead trainings, in-services, workshops and meetings related to assigned activities.
  • Coordinate parent communication regarding resources and supports for attendance, social emotional and/or academic supports.
  • Conduct home visits to establish communication and positive connections between the parent/guardian and school setting around identified issues.
  • Serve as a liaison between families and the school to positively promote collaborative processes in educational planning for students by encouraging parent/guardian participation in schools.
  • Provide consultation and restorative practices with school staff, including teachers, on culturally responsive relationship building with students.
  • Provide case management of students requiring additional supports in order to increase school connectedness and implement best practices and culturally responsive interventions.
  • Provide leadership or specialized groups for identified students
  • Partner with community stakeholders and businesses to help create leadership opportunities, community service, educational projects, personal growth and similar experiences for students.
  • Provide personal, emotional, and academic support for identified students.
  • Create, maintain and distribute required records, reports, and other documentation.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, Sociology, Criminology, Social Work or related field is required.
  • Two years working with children and/or adolescents to affect positive academic, social and/or emotional life-skills behaviors is required. Experience serving the needs of a richly diverse student and community population is required. Additional years of the required experience which demonstrate the required knowledge and abilities may be considered in lieu of the Bachelor’s Degree on a year-for-year basis.

Any other combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the candidate is likely to possess the skill, knowledge, ability and trait characteristics essential for this classification may be considered.


Special Requirements:

  • Some positions in this classification may require variable work hours including evenings and weekends.
  • Some positions in this classification may require the ability to read, write and speak in a language other than English.
  • Some positions in this classification may require the use of a personal automobile and possession of a valid Class C Oregon driver’s license.

Portland Public Schools is a public employer and participates in the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS/OPSRP). Eligible employees are required by statute to contribute 6% of salary on a pre-tax basis to OPSRP/IAP, after serving six months under a PERS employer.
