THE OPPORTUNITY

Portland Public Schools is seeking dynamic Assistant Principals with a demonstrated record of improving student performance and who share our Vision, PPS reImagined .

We are seeking a collaborative, teamwork oriented, passionate leader with focused experience to join us as Assistant Principal This position will be part of Portland Public Schools' Office of School Performance. With a racial equity and equality focused lens , the Assistant Principal support the school principal in establishing a learning environment and implementing an instructional vision that promotes academic excellence, and the personal growth of every student, while closing opportunity gaps and narrowing disparities between the highest- and lowest-performing students.

School Description

Faubion PK-8 School is a robust community school situated in NE Portland, serving almost 700 pre-k through eighth grade students. Rebuilt in 2017, the facility is one of the district's newest schools, boasting not only state of the art classrooms and maker's spaces, but flexible learning spaces, a robust pre-k program, an outstanding playground, and numerous partnerships. The school is a hub of the community and celebrates its diversity through celebrations such as Black Excellence, Latino Heritage, and Multicultural, STEAM, and culturally specific family gatherings. Faubion is a SUN (Schools Uniting Neighborhoods) school, offering after school programming for students and community programming for families. Faubion is looking for an assistant principal that will continue to foster community collaboration, while also supporting the academic success of students in pre-k through eighth grade. The leader will need to have experience working in large, diverse schools, with a history of improving student outcomes in math and reading. The mission of Faubion School is to empower students academically and socially to become passionate leaders. The school does this through deep community and family engagement, and a strong commitment to equity, inclusion, and a radical sense of accountability for the success of every student. Assistant Principals are expected to :

  • Support professional educators individually, and in the context of school teams and PLCs, in strengthening their instructional practice;
  • Partner with educators to create a community of continuous learning for all staff and students;
  • Foster a culture of high expectations, providing every student with equitable access to high quality and culturally relevant instruction;
  • Support and implement the District 's Racial Equity Policy ;
  • Build strong partnerships with staff, families, and community partners;
  • Create a safe, welcoming environment that reflects and supports the racial and ethnic diversity of the student population and communities served;
  • Support school and district initiatives to implement multi-tiered systems of support, restorative practices, and the guaranteed and viable curriculum;
  • Participate in managing operational, technical, and school activities and staff to promote student growt h.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

Instructional :

  • Use data to assess student progress, formulate instructional practices and to differentiate instruction; focus on narrowing disparities between the highest and lowest performing students in order to meet the academic needs of individual students;
  • Demonstrate knowledge of best practices in English Language Development and Special Education across the content areas;
  • Participate in the development and evaluation of educational programs;
  • Coach, support, supervise, and evaluate teachers and other staff, individually and in school teams, as assigned by the Principal;
  • Encourage and support implementation of instructional and specialized programs, assisting educators and others to pilot such efforts when appropriate;
  • Participate in the supervision of students as assigned, including athletic and extra-curricular events, lunch and recess;
  • Promote the use of technology in the teaching and learning process.
  • Operational :

  • Supervise operations as assigned by the principal, by participating in the development of class schedules, teacher assignments, academic and extracurricular activities' schedules and other school operations;
  • Supervise monitoring of student attendance and investigate when appropriate and comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rules, and board policy.
  • School Climate & Management / Discipline :

  • Use relational and restorative justice-based strategies to teach, promote, and reward and reinforce positive behavior for students;
  • Ensure that student and staff expectations are clear and visible for all;
  • Work collaboratively with student, school team and families to address problematic student behaviors in line with PPS policies;
  • Use data to inform planning for reduction in exclusionary discipline and elimination of any discipline practices gaps that may exist for historically underserved students;
  • Work collaboratively with school and district staff to develop appropriate interventions and supports;
  • Partner with the Dean or SMS / SCS to investigate and address discipline issues in line with RESJ policies and principles.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education, Training and Experience :

  • A State of Oregon issued Administrative License is required at the time of appointment;
  • A minimum of three (3) years of teaching experience and experience in a teacher / educator leadership position is required.
  • Special requirements :

  • Positions in this classification may require the use of a personal automobile and possession of a valid Class C Oregon driver's license;
  • Work hours may include on- and off-campus evening and weekend activities and meetings and district, school and student functions.
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Experience in a PK-12 school leadership position with demonstrated results in improving academic performance is preferred;
  • Experience working in a richly diverse school community and environment and bilingual or multilingual skills are highly desirable.
