What are the responsibilities and job description for the HR Generalist position at Portland Thorns?
THE ROLE:
We are seeking an HR Generalist to support both the Portland Thorns and the Portland WNBA. The HR Generalist is responsible for managing, developing, and maintaining the Human Resources function as well as providing support and guidance to employees on various Human Resources issues. The HR Generalist will also be responsible for implementing HR best practices in benefits administration, onboarding, recruiting, and developing supporting HR systems that will foster a high-performance culture. The role will have a heavy focus on recruiting and onboarding in 2025, as we continue to grow our organization. This role will support the talent acquisition Manager and lead the onboarding of new hires. position must be able to interface with all levels of the organization including all department Heads and external contacts in a timely and efficient manner.
WHAT YOU’LL BE UP TO:
Talent Acquisition:
- Support Talent Acquisition Manager in job posting creation, candidate screening, and job offer creation
- Maintain accurate Job Descriptions and update organizational charts
New Hire Onboarding:
- Serve as lead in completing all pre-onboarding tasks, including background checks, ordering equipment, and first-day support for new hires
- Conduct new hire orientation
- Maintain accurate checklists and reporting to ensure all onboarding tasks are completed
Benefits Administration:
- Assist with benefits administration, including annual open enrollment
Training:
- Manage Training system, ensuring all new hires complete training during onboarding and annual training is delivered to staff
- Generate reporting to monitor training progress
HR Analytics:
- Utilize current HR Platforms to generate HR reporting, identify trends, and support organizational goals
- Collaborate with HR leadership to develop and implement data-driven HR initiatives
Collaboration and Training:
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure seamless integration of HR processes
- Provide training and support to employees and managers on HR Platforms
- Participate in the identification, development, and implementation of HR strategies associated with accomplishing business objectives. Implement HR strategies to achieve organizational goals and objectives
Additional Generalist duties:
- Ensure Human Resources policies and practices are consistent with and support the organization’s mission and are in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
- Assist with seasonal employee program, job shadows, etc, and ensure quality and compliance of the programs
- Assist with job fairs onsite and at colleges/universities
- Perform all other duties as assigned
WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A THORN:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred, or equivalent experience
- A minimum of three years of experience in the HR field
- Ability and willingness to demonstrate and maintain competency as required for the position of HR Generalist including the functional areas of employee relations, compensation, benefits, training, organizational development, HRIS database, recruitment, employee health/ wellness, and employment/ labor laws
- Proven knowledge of HR industry practices
- Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships across all levels of an organization
- Ability to manage multiple projects with strong prioritization skills, in a fast-paced environment
- Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills
