POSITION TITLE: COORDINATOR OF SCHOOL SAFETY AND SECURITY REPORTS TO: DIRECTOR OF AUXILIARY SERVICES
OVERTIME STATUS: EXEMPT PAY GRADE: 253
JOB SUMMARY:
The Coordinator of School Safety and Security is responsible for coordinating all aspects of school safety and security operations for the school division. This includes the development, implementation, training and maintenance of plans, procedures, and systems that support a safe and secure learning environment. The Coordinator will provide direction for the safety and security plans for each school, performs a variety of administrative management activities related to school safety, and leads initiatives through research, design, implementation, and management for the continuous improvement of the safety and security program. Provide leadership and coordination for safe school facilities by community-wide planning, coordinating, and designing of protocols. He/she will work with the PPS leadership team, school leadership, first responders, and other community organizations to ensure a comprehensive, well-coordinated network of practices and programs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Skills to understand and direct emergency response situations, skill to develop, implement and maintain plans and procedures for student/staff safety; skills to effectively use word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software programs; ability to effectively use and monitor security systems; ability to analyze data and develop reports; analyze and solve complex operational problems; knowledge of cost-benefit, forecasting and statistical techniques; knowledge of automated information systems with computers; ability to plan, organize and communicate complex ideas effectively both orally and in writing; ability to communicate well in varied and stressful situations, establish and maintain effective working relationships, and maintain confidentiality of information. Work is typically performed in an office setting with frequent visits to school sites. Occasionally work is performed beyond normal work hours when students and staff are not at the schools. Occasional bending, stooping, crawling and lifting up to 30 pounds are necessary. Frequent communication with principals, employees, and the general public is expected.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's Degree in public safety or related field; extensive experience, beyond the required experience level can be utilized in substitution of a degree. Supervisory experience in a security related field is preferred. Valid driver's license required.

- Coordinates and consults with technology and school-based staff regarding school security systems;
- Ensures access control systems are monitored and periodically reviews system reports Audits security cameras to make sure they are working properly;
- Aids district personnel in matters concerning the security of students and staff as well as those involving law violations and/or misuse of property;
- Supports budget development and grant applications for school safety and emergency response;
- Coordinates service provision between schools and emergency service providers;
- Coordinates security at sporting events, commencement ceremonies, board meetings and
- other division events as needed;
- Evaluates the strengths and challenges of current safety plans, policies, and procedures;
- Performs or coordinates yearly trainings in emergency response for all division employees;
- Perform yearly safety audits in consultation with emergency service providers;
- Works with each school's Crisis Management Team (CMT) to ensure on-going team development and effective crisis planning/management;
- Works collaboratively with PPS mental health team and community resources to plan and
- implement programs and activities to reduce school violence;
- Prepare and maintain school division safety and emergency response plan and supports the same for school level plans, including coordination of reviews/revisions at least annually;
- Manages the crossing guard program in collaboration with the division operations team
- Recommend changes in safety systems and operations based on current industry knowledge and results of school safety reviews;
- Participates in or leads public meetings as directed where matters of safety and security are discussed;
- Respond to the scene of emergencies on school campuses when assistance is necessary or requested;
- Reviews and saves security/surveillance camera footage to aid school administrators investigating school-based infractions or law enforcement in investigating incidents related to students, staff, and patrons;
- Serves as liaison for the school division with law enforcement authorities as well as local state and national organizations sponsoring safety and security programs.
