TITLE: School Counselor - Long-term Substitute (LTS) needed from March 5, 2025 for the remainder of the 2024-2025 school year. REPORTS TO: Building PrincipalEDUCATIONAL/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED: MUST be currently certified by the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) as a School Counselor in Grades Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 12 POSITION SUMMARY: The position of a K-12 School Counselor is to provide school counseling services to and on behalf of students in addition to collaborating with school staff and community agencies in order to maximize overall participation and independence in the school setting. The school counselor may function as a member of the Evaluation Team, IEP team, Crisis Intervention Team, Section 504 team, and RTI/MTSS Team. The school counselor offers social skills and emotional development as well as college and career planning through either direct contact with students and families or in consultation with other professionals.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1.
Demonstrate an understanding of applying the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) standards in a dynamic, real-world setting and applies school counseling professional standards to all aspects of their role2. Designs and implements instruction aligned to the ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors for student success in large-group, classroom, small group and individual settings; uses the ASCA Mindsets and Behaviors to inform the implementation of a school counseling program3. Participates in the annual development of the school counseling program goals, student outcome goals and related evaluation activities based on student data4. Seeks opportunities to integrate school counseling curriculum with curriculum with other disciplines5.
Demonstrate an understanding of child development at the appropriate level of job assignment6. Use data to create, implement and evaluate a comprehensive counseling curriculum7. Facilitate and/or participate on MTSS teams to create and implement tiers of intervention8. Demonstrate the knowledge and ability to design, implement, and evaluate programming geared towards building a school environment that meets the needs of all students, regardless of race, ethnicity, poverty, or individual learning needs9.
Work collaboratively with other department members to design, implement and evaluate programming geared toward student post-secondary preparation10.Work cooperatively with administration, teachers, families, and the community in order to meet the needs of all learners11.Design, implement, and evaluate student ILP process, including the use of the ILP to make decisions about individual student programming12. Provide direct services to students in the areas of instruction of counseling curriculum, assessing student abilities, interests, and achievements to help them make decisions about their future, and counseling to providing professional assistance and support to a student or small groups of students during times of transition heightened stress, critical change, or other situations impeding student success13. Work collaboratively with the mental health team to support students and families when they are in crisis to include risk screenings and participation in threat assessments14.Provide indirect services to students in the areas of consultation to share strategies supporting student achievement with parents, teachers, other educators, and community organizations; collaboration by working with other educators, parents, and the community to support student achievement, and through referrals to support students and families to school or community resources for additional assistance and information15.Other duties as assigned by the building principal (or designee) or Director of College and Career ReadinessPHYSICAL DEMANDS: 1. Must be able to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time, in both indoor and outdoor environments, and possible move and traverse in order to maintain a safe learning environment7. Stamina to work irregular or extended hours to include a full day and then attending meetings or supervising evening events 8. Work at a desk, conference table, small student classroom table, or in meetings in various configurations 9.
