Overview:

The Residential Counselor at Positive Pathways is responsible for supporting adults with intellectual disabilities ("Individuals") in a residential setting. The role includes providing direct care, guidance, and assistance to help individuals lead fulfilling lives while maintaining their personal independence. Residential Counselors will support individuals with daily living tasks, foster social and recreational activities, and ensure their safety and well-being in the residential environment. The role also requires maintaining accurate documentation and working collaboratively with team members to ensure the success of the individuals we serve.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Direct Care and Support:
  • Provide direct care and support to individuals in a residential setting, including assistance with daily living activities (feeding, toileting, personal hygiene, dressing, etc.).
  • Support individuals in maintaining their independence and dignity while encouraging participation in household tasks and routines.
  • Behavior Management:
  • Assist individuals with implementing their Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and provide consistent follow-through with behavior management strategies.
  • Respond quickly and appropriately to crisis situations and assist in resolving them as necessary.
  • Daily Life and Activity Support:
  • Assist individuals with their daily schedules, including recreational, social, and therapeutic activities, to promote a sense of well-being.
  • Encourage social interactions and community integration.
  • Help individuals achieve their personal goals as outlined in their Individualized Service Plans (ISPs).
  • Documentation and Reporting:
  • Maintain accurate records for everyone, including daily logs, behavior tracking, incident reports, and other required documentation.
  • Ensure that all required reports and paperwork are completed in a timely manner and in compliance with agency policies and regulations.
  • Health and Safety:
  • Ensure a safe and healthy environment for the individuals served, including monitoring for any signs of health concerns or safety risks.
  • Administer medications as prescribed and follow all health-related protocols.
  • Follow infection control policies and ensure that the living environment meets health and safety standards.
  • Team Collaboration:
  • Work collaboratively with other team members, including case managers, therapists, and family members, to provide the highest level of care and support.
  • Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and in-service programs to improve skills and knowledge.
  • Transportation:
  • Provide transportation to appointments, activities, and community outings as necessary, following safety protocols and maintaining accurate transportation logs.
  • Compliance:
  • Follow all policies and procedures as they relate to daily operations, health and safety, confidentiality, and reporting.
  • Complete all required training, including CPR/First Aid, DDA-related training, and behavior management techniques.

Possible Shifts (Depending on Operational Needs):

  • Saturday & Sunday – (Overnight) 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM
  • Monday through Friday - 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM
  • Saturday & Sunday - 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • At least six (6) months of related experience or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Strong ability to read and interpret documents, such as safety rules, instructions, and manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups, such as customers or coworkers.
  • Ability to apply common sense and follow instructions in various forms (written, oral, or diagrammed).

Certifications and Licenses:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid Maryland Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
  • Completion of required certifications, including CPR/First Aid, and any other developmental disability-related training.

Other Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Ability to work in various physical environments (indoor/outdoor, exposure to weather, loud noise levels, etc.).
  • Ability to operate machines, vehicles, and job-specific tools.
  • Must pass a physical exam and TB test before starting.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to walk significant distances, occasionally run, and stand for long periods.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs., frequent lifting of up to 20 lbs.
  • Frequent physical activities such as reaching, stooping, balancing, kneeling, and crouching.
  • Must be able to work safely in environments with potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens.

Work Environment:

  • Work environments include both indoor and outdoor settings, with potential exposure to weather conditions such as rain, wind, or snow.
  • Moderate to high noise levels, including loud voices and office equipment.
  • Work environments may include video/audio monitoring for safety purposes.

Training Requirements (Prior to Starting):

  • Physical Exam
  • TB Test (must be current)
  • Criminal Background Check Completion Receipt
  • CPR/First Aid Certification
  • Medication Certification (CMT)
  • Behavior Principles and Strategies (BPS)
  • DDA Training (Including online modules such as eTracking, The Aging Process, Communicable Disease, and others)

Compensation:

  • Starting at $17.00 per hour
