Description
The Grades 6 through 12 chorus teacher and advisor is a full-time position reporting to the Head of the Intermediate School. This role is the lead teacher for one section of Middle School chorus and one section of Intermediate School chorus. In addition, the role includes teaching two Upper School music offerings to be determined later (Upper School Chorus, music theory or music history). The individual in this role will also serve as an Intermediate School advisor. The teacher creates and directs several performances throughout the school year, leads regular rehearsals, and supports assemblies and class plays held during the school day as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepare lesson plans following curriculum guidelines and requirements.
- Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities by integrating competencies and goals into the lesson plans.
- Teach the assigned curriculum using a variety of instructional resources.
- Maintain attendance records.
- Manage student behavior in the classroom and maintain a positive educational environment for all students.
- Evaluate students’ progress.
- Communicate with parents to discuss student progress and areas of growth.
- Participate in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and other teacher training workshops.
- Ensure the social, emotional, and academic growth of students.
- Communicate and collaborate with classroom teachers and advisors.
- Assume duties such as supporting student clubs, lunch duties, dismissal, etc
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Desired Skills and Knowledge:
- Understanding of music theory
- Ability to sight-read vocal music
- Solid piano skills (preferred but not required)
- Advanced organization and communication skills
- Understanding of students’ educational and emotional needs at a wide range of developmental stages
- Background in vocal pedagogy and private voice instruction
- Familiarity with choral repertoire (the choral “canon” as well as diverse composers and texts)
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in music performance or music education required
- A minimum of two years’ experience teaching chorus from upper-elementary through collegiate-level choral ensembles
