Description
The camp will take place from June 23 to August 1, and the Director is expected to be present for the full six-week duration. Additionally, the Director will attend pre-camp meetings that begin in May and assist the team and the Assistant Director with camp setup and training during the week of June 16. The position requires availability Monday through Friday, from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. The Director is responsible for day-to-day camp operations prioritizing safety of the campers and well-being of the staff. The Director is a leadership presence in nurturing a sense of community and creating a healthy camp environment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee camp curriculum to ensure that the activities are age appropriate and offer a safe, engaging and high quality summer program.
- Oversee camper placement within their program and maintain camper attendance records.
- Communicate with camper families, if needed. Maintain a log of communication with camper families.
- Actively participate in camp activities to build relationships with campers and staff.
- Ensuring all safety protocols and procedures established by Summer@Potomac are followed by campers and panther day camp staff members.
- Be easily accessible to the Assistant Director and the Head Counselor to support them, specially with camper discipline and emergency situations.
- Working closely with the Panther Day Camp Assistant Director to manage the ordering of camp supplies and equipment.
- Ensuring the proper use of Summer@Potomac facilities and equipment.
- Oversee both morning and afternoon carpool processes daily, for the weeks camp is in session.
- Work closely with the Summer Admin office to ensure smooth dismissal of campers.
- Communicate effectively with the Director of Summer Programs to report any concerns about a camper’s and a staff member’s health, safety and behavior.
- Serve as a mentor and trainer to the Panther Day Camp Assistant Director and Head Counselors. Schedule and assists with weekly meetings with their team.
- Schedule, supervise and evaluate Head Counselors. Communicate the Head Counselor and Assistant Counselor evaluation with the Director of Summer Camp.
- Participate in staff orientations, pre-camp staff training, preparations for camp opening and meetings.
- Adhere to the procedures and policies outlined in the Summer@Potomac Handbook.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Must be 21 years of age and possess a degree
- At least 2 years of previous experience as a director, teacher, child care or a related field.
- Prior experience in managing camps administratively is preferred.
- Strong social, organizational, communication and computer skills are required.
- Responsible, energetic, enthusiastic and have a positive attitude.
- Physical ability to participate in activities with campers (run, sit on the floor, walk and stand for longer periods of time).
- Ability to recognize and respond to individual and cultural differences within a diverse population of campers and staff.
